Packers trade proposal sends $5 million O-lineman with Chip Kelly ties to Raiders

By | March 24, 2025

The Green Bay Packers’ biggest move in free agency so far was the addition of offensive lineman Aaron Banks.

After allowing just one sack in 2024, Banks landed a four-year, $77 million deal from the Packers that includes $27 million guaranteed. As a result, Banks will have the left guard spot in Green Bay locked down for the foreseeable future.

The Packers also used a first-round pick on Jordan Morgan last year, and the team likely wants the top pick to take over the other guard spot. This means Sean Rhyan, who played almost 1,000 snaps last season, could be squeezed out.

Moe Moton of Sportsnaut recently identified Rhyan as a logical trade target for the Las Vegas Raiders. The Raiders could use help at guard, as the team doesn’t have a sure starting duo at guard for 2025 and could use more depth overall.

Regarding Rhyan’s fit with the Raiders, Moton offered the following:

The Green Bay Packers signed left guard Aaron Banks to a four-year, $77 million deal. He will likely continue to play left guard, which means Elgton Jenkins could slide over to center while Sean Rhyan and 2024 first-rounder Jordan Morgan battle for the right guard spot.

If that’s the case, the Packers may want to see what they have in their top draft pick from last year. Rhyan could be expendable, though he can bring competition for the open guard spots along the Raiders offensive line. At UCLA, Rhyan played under offensive coordinator Chip Kelly between 2019 and 2021.

As Moton pointed out, Rhyan is from the West Coast and has experience playing under Chip Kelly, making this a logical pairing.

In 2024, Rhyan earned a 62.0 overall Pro Football Focus grade which ranked 67th out of 135 qualified guards. The UCLA product graded out much better as a pass-blocker than run-blocker, earning a 69.4 grade in pass protection.

Securing a quality pass-blocker on the interior would be huge for Chip Kelly’s offense. The team brought in veteran quarterback Geno Smith, as well, so it’s likely the Raiders will be pass-first in 2025.

In Vegas, Rhyan could take over for at left guard. Dylan Parham performed admirably at Rhyan’s preferred right guard spot in 2024, so the team may not wish to mess with that.

2025 is the final year of Rhyan’s rookie deal, with the lineman set to test the market next offseason. This means Rhyan shouldn’t cost the Raiders an arm and a leg in a trade.
