Padres vs. Phillies live score, updates, highlights from Game 5 of 2022 NLCS

It has been a tale of two seasons for the Phillies in 2022.

At the beginning of the summer, the team was floundering. Manager Joe Girardi was fired in early June after a 22-29 start.

Things went from bad to worse when reigning National League MVP Bryce Harper went on the injured list with left thumb fracture at the end of the month.

With the Mets and Braves rolling, it seemed as if Philadelphians were in for another long and disappointing season. 

But that hasn’t happened. Under the tutelage of new skipper Rob Thomson, the Phils clawed their way into the postseason. Now, they’re on the brink of the franchise’s eighth appearance in the Fall Classic.

Despite Philadelphia’s 3-1 lead in the NLCS, this has been a fairly tight series. Even Game 4, which ended in a 10-6 Phillies victory, started with a Padres bang: San Diego scored four runs in the first inning.

All of this is to say, nothing has been easy for Philadelphia this season. But one more win in the NLCS, and it will all be worth it.

Bottom of seventh inning

5:09 p.m.: Darvish headed back out for the seventh. He’ll face off against Bryson Stott.

Top of seventh inning

5:00 p.m.: WILD PITCH! Azocar comes around on Dominguez’s second wild pitch of the at-bat, giving San Diego its first lead of the game. What a rally by the Friars.

Padres 3, Phillies 2

4:59 p.m.: Azocar takes third on the wild pitch! It’s been a challenge for Dominguez to find his grip in this relief appearance.

4:57 p.m.: Dominguez with the strikeout! Kim whiffs on the fastball. Two away for the Padres and Grisham, who is yet to get a hit in the series, is up to the plate.

4:55 p.m.: Big strikeout for Dominguez! Pumps a fastball past Drury for the first out of the inning. Still lots of work to do for Philly’s right-handed reliever but he’s facing against the bottom portion of San Diego’s lineup.

4:51 p.m.: TIE GAME! Bell flexes an inside fastball into right field, bringing Cronenworth home from second. That’s knot things up.

Looks like Bell is coming off for pinch runner Jose Azocar.

Philadelphia is in serious trouble.

4:50 p.m.: Dominguez’s breaking ball sails on him, going into the backstop. That will send Cronenworth into second base. Drama in Philly!

4:45 p.m.: Cronenworth squares up Wheeler’s pitch and smashes it right past a diving Segura. Tying runner on base for San Diego, and that will end things for Wheeler.

Wonderful display by the Phillies’ workhorse. Here’s his final line: 6.0 innings, eight strikeouts, zero walks, one earned run.

Looks like it’s Seranthony Dominguez making the trek from the bullpen for Philadelphia.

Bottom of sixth inning

4:41 p.m.: Bohm gets under a Darvish breaking ball and flies out to Profar in left field. Onto the seventh inning we go!

4:40 p.m.: Cronenworth easily grabs Castellanos infield fly for the second out of the inning.

4:36 p.m.: Darvish gets Harper out with the K. Castellanos to the plate now for Philadelphia.

Top of sixth inning

4:32 p.m.: Wheeler turned it up for this inning. Back-to-back strikeouts on Soto and Machado to end the sixth frame. Nine outs away from a chance at championship glory for the Phils.

4:30 p.m.: Filthy breaking ball by Wheeler to set Soto down on strikes. The ball was about three feet short of home plate and still fooled Soto. Nasty.

4:27 p.m.: Bohm makes a nice running grab in foul ground to get the first out of the inning, leaving the bases open for Wheeler to face Soto.

Bottom of fifth inning

4:22 p.m.: Another rising fastball catches Realmuto swinging. Darvish is giving the Friars a chance through five.

4:19 p.m.: Darvish once again gets behind Hoskins early. This time, he concedes a five-pitch walk. Not what you want with two outs in the bag.

4:17 p.m.: Schwarber just misses on a meatball in the zone. It will fall to Soto, who is standing on the warning track, for out No. 2.

4:15 p.m.: Darvish sets down Marsh on strikes. Finally used that upstairs fastball to get past one of Philly’s batters. He might need to do that a few more times to keep himself in the game.

Top of fifth inning

4:08 p.m.: Pinpoint precision from Wheeler to get Grisham down on strikes! He fires the fastball on the inside corner in the 3-2 count and catches Grisham looking. Huge out for the Phils.

4:05 p.m.: Kim pops out into foul ground. Realmuto gets a track on the ball and fields it easily for the first out of the inning.

4:03 p.m.: Drury leads off the inning with a smoked single through the 5.5 hole. Solid stuff by the trade deadline acquisition.

Bottom of fourth inning

4:00 p.m.: And just like that, Darvish is out of the inning! Filthy slider tailing outside the zone that fools Segura. That’s more like it, Yu.

3:58 p.m.: One to look out for at the moment: Darvish is approaching 60 pitches through four innings. That’s not an excessive load, obviously.

But he hasn’t quite looked his electric self. Will be interesting to see how long of a leash manager Bob Melvin gives his ace if he’s not able to get rhythm in his fastball, especially with the season quite literally on the line.

3:57 p.m.: Alec Bohm flies out to Soto for the second out of the inning.

3:56 p.m.: Big theme for the game seems to be Darvish’s unwillingness to use his fastball. His average pitch velocity is two ticks lower than usual.

Seems he can’t quite get his footing on the mound, possibly an aftereffect of the drizzling conditions at Citizens Bank Park.

3:55 p.m.: Soto snags a fly ball in right field for Out No. 1.

3:50 p.m.: Darvish starts the fourth by hitting Nick Castellanos. Can’t keep on putting needless runners on base.

Top of fourth inning

3:49 p.m.: Such an unlucky moment for the Padres! Bell got good wood on a Wheeler fastball, but it hit Philadelphia’s ace right in the back and deflected right into the path of…Realmuto. The Phils’ catcher throws out Bell with ease to end the inning.

Phillies 2, Padres 1

3:48 p.m.: Cronenworth takes first after being hit by a pitch. Tying run on base with Bell up to bat. Not ideal for Wheeler.

3:47 p.m.: Machado grounds out for the second out of the inning. Cronenworth up to the plate.

3:42 p.m.: HOME RUN! Soto absolutely demolishes a fastball up in the middle of the zone. A no-doubt moonshot into right center. Looks like it went about 440 feet.

That breaks up Wheeler’s perfect game bid. Big moment for San Diego.

3:41 p.m.: Profar flexes one into right center, but Marsh’s range proves vital as he gets the fly ball with relative ease. That’s one away for the Phils.

Bottom of third inning

3:39 p.m.: Harper blooped a pitch into shallow right field, but it falls right into Cronenworth’s path in the shift. Padres get out of the inning, but the damage is done.

Phillies 2, Padres 0

3:36 p.m.: It goes from bad to worse for Darvish and the Friars, with Realmuto firing a single into left field. Now, Harper is up with a man on base.

3:35 p.m.: HOME RUN! Hoskins does it again! That’s his fourth hit of the series…and his fourth home run.

Darvish fell behind 3-0 and tried to slip a breaking ball past Hoskins. He wasn’t having any of it, and smoked it into the sea of red in left field.

3:32 p.m.: Schwarber darts for second base! Umpire rules Schwarber is out, but replay seems to indicate Cronenworth didn’t tag him.

This call is looking like it’ll be overturned. Philadelphia’s dugout already telling the umps to review that call.

3:31 p.m.: Another plate appearance, another walk for Schwarber. Hoskins back to the plate with a runner on first now.

3:30 p.m.: Seems Darvish is doing everything in his power to avoid giving Schwarber something over the heart of the plate. His moonshot from Game 1 might still be weighing on Darvish’s mind at the moment.

3:28 p.m.: Brandon Marsh got some good wood on a Darvish breaking ball, but it fell harmlessly into the glove of Juan Soto in right field. Two away for the Phils.

3:25 p.m.: Darvish has started to settle into a groove. Just forced Jean Segura into a weak grounder into shortstop for the first out of the inning.

Top of third inning

3:20 p.m.: Alec Bohm fields a chopper from Austin Nola before firing it to first. That’s a perfect first three innings for Wheeler.

3:19 p.m.: Grisham with the swinging and miss! Wheeler has four straight strikeouts so far.

3:18 p.m.: Wheeler opens the frame with a K on Kim Ha-Seong. Good stuff by the NL Cy Young runner-up from last year.

Bottom of second inning

3:13 p.m: Darvish is gets out of the inning courtesy of a double and a lazy fly ball. 

Padres headed back to the plate now!

3:09 p.m.: Harper mashes a ball into opposite field!

That’s Phily’s first hit of the game.

Top of second inning

3:04 p.m.: And another one for Wheeler. Gets Drury out on strikes.

3:03 p.m.: Another K for wheeler, who puts down Josh Bell on strikes.

3:01 p.m.: Wheeler induces a lazy fly ball on Cronenworth, which is fired back into first.

Bottom of first inning

2:58 p.m.: Darvish pumps the fastball past JT Realmuto for Strike 3! He’s out the first inning!

2:57 p.m.: Darvish avoiding the strike zone like the plague at the moment.

2:55 p.m.: Huge double play for Darvish! Machado whizzes a bouncing ball into second, before Jake Cronenworth makes the throw to first to beat out Hoskins. Two away for the Phils.

2:53 p.m.: Schwarber takes a five-pitch walk to lead things off for Philadelphia. Hoskins up to the plate next for Philly.

2:52 p.m.: Kyle Schwarber leading off for the Phils. He took Darvish deep the last time they faced off against each other, back in Game 1.

2:45 p.m.: Wheeler gets the strikeout on Machado! A nine-pitch at-bat ends with a fastball tailing out the zone that fools the Padres’ star.

1-2-3 inning for Wheeler, despite tossing 22 pitches in the frame.

2:43 p.m.: Soto fizzes a ground ball right into Rhys Hoskins’ glove, who flips it to Wheeler for Out No. 2.

2:42 p.m.: Soto fouls a ball off of his foot. That’s going to leave a mark.

2:40 p.m.: A Profar pop out starts the proceedings for the Phillies. Lengthy at-bat, but a positive result for Wheeler. Juan Soto up now.

2:38 p.m.: First pitch is in there for Wheeler, a 97 MPH fastball that Jurickson Profar whiffs on. Here we go!

2:30 p.m.: It’ll be a battle of two aces in this one. Yu Darvish takes the ball for the Padres, while Zack Wheeler is on the mound for Philly to start.

We’re about 10 minutes away from the start of Game 5.
