Penn State vs. Iowa live score, updates, highlights from 2023 ‘White Out’ game

By | September 23, 2023

It’s the most wonderful time of the year in Happy Valley. Penn State hosts its annual “White Out” game in a top-25 matchup against Iowa.

Drew Allar, quarterback for the seventh-ranked Nittany Lions, had a less-than-stellar performance in Penn State’s recent win over Illinois. He completed less than 50 percent of his passes and was unable to score a touchdown. However, it was the sophomore’s first away-game start and his third overall, so Penn State isn’t too concerned. How Allar steps up against 24th-ranked Iowa will be a better testament to his abilities behind center.

Cade McNamara leads the Hawkeyes this year after three seasons at Michigan. Like Allar, he comes off his recent game completing less than 50 percent of his passes. For McNamara, it was against Western Michigan and his third time in his career he’s completed less than half his attempts. He has yet to reach 200 yards in a single game this season. Not helping his case is injury to tight end Luke Lachey, who will miss the foreseeable future after ankle surgery. Running backs Kaleb Johnson and Jaziun Patterson will not see the field against Penn State either. Look for Leshon Williams, who leads the team with 164 rushing yards, to pick up a bulk of the carries.

To pull off the upset, the Hawkeyes need to take advantage of their run game. Penn State’s rush defense ranks 34th in the nation, offering a opportunity for Iowa to break down its opponent.
