Pep Guardiola, Manchester City’s head coach, has issued an apology for an offhand remark he made during a press conference following his team’s 3-3 draw with Feyenoord.

Guardiola’s comment, which referenced self-harm, came while explaining a scratch on his nose.

“I want to harm myself,” he had joked when asked about the injury, later clarifying that it was caused by a sharp fingernail.

The comment quickly drew attention, leading the manager to address the situation publicly.

On Wednesday, Guardiola released a statement on social media expressing his regret.

“I was caught off guard with a question… My answer was in no way intended to make light of the very serious issue of self-harm,” he said.

He also took the opportunity to highlight mental health resources, encouraging people to seek help through organizations like Samaritans.

A difficult week for Man City and Pep

Guardiola’s comment came after a frustrating match for Manchester City. The team had built a 3-0 lead against Feyenoord but collapsed in the final 15 minutes, allowing their opponents to equalize.

The result has intensified the pressure on City’s Champions League campaign.

Guardiola had previously mentioned his players were struggling mentally, and midfielder Kevin De Bruyne echoed these concerns, admitting the team struggles in tough moments.

City’s next test will be against Liverpool, with Guardiola expected to speak further about the incident during Friday’s pre-match press conference.
