Phillies vs. Astros weather updates: World Series Game 3 postponed due to rainy weather in Philadelphia

By | October 31, 2022

Turns out, it’s not always sunny in Philadelphia.

Game 3 of the 2022 World Series has been postponed due to inclement weather. Rain is set to fall throughout the night on Monday, and MLB made the decision to push back Game 3 to Tuesday.

First pitch in Game 3 will now take place at 8:03 p.m. ET (7:03 p.m. CT) on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The series is currently tied 1-1, and the stakes could not be higher heading into a pivotal game.

The rain is part of a larger low-pressure system currently making its way up the east coast. Unfortunately for both trick-or-treaters and baseball fans, it’ll be a soggy Halloween night in the City of Brotherly Love.

Weather has already impacted a number of games this postseason, with Game 5 of the NLCS between the Phillies and Padres also threatened by delays. That game went ahead as scheduled despite the rainy conditions, and the Phillies won a thriller to clinch their spot in the World Series. Additionally, Games 2 and 5 of the ALDS between the Yankees and Guardians were postponed due to rain.

Philadelphia has been at the center of weather-related controversy before. During Game 5 of the 2008 World Series between the Phillies and Rays, the game was suspended due to rain in the middle of the sixth inning — right after the Rays had tied the score at 2-2. Play finally resumed two days later, with the Phillies ultimately clinching the Commissioner’s Trophy with a 4-3 win.

The Sporting News will be tracking the weather in Philadelphia throughout the day on Monday. Here are all of the latest updates on Game 3 of the 2022 World Series:

Phillies vs. Astros weather updates

(All times Eastern)

7:04 p.m. — So there it is, there will be no baseball tonight from Citizens Bank Park. MLB has confirmed the remaining games will all be pushed back one day, and tickets will be valid for the game number on each ticket.

6:59 p.m. — It’s official: MLB confirms Game 3 has been postponed.

6:56 p.m. — Nightengale is also reporting that Game 3 has been moved to Tuesday. That means they will play three nights in a row in Philly for Games 3, 4 and 5 before heading back to Houston for Games 6 and 7 this weekend (if necessary).

6:51 p.m. — According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Game 3 has been postponed.

6:17 p.m. — The raindrops have started to come down at Citizens Bank Park. It’s expected to keep raining for most of the rest of the night. However, we won’t get an official announcement on the status of Game 3 until around 7 p.m. ET.

5:25 p.m. — MLB has released another update on the situation, and not much has changed. As the statement says, the forecast continues to call for rain. The commissioner’s office and both teams will keep monitoring the radar and make a decision closer to the scheduled first pitch.

5:19 p.m. — Seems like the Phillies are in good spirits despite the ominous forecast.

5:14 p.m. — The tarp is on the field at Citizens Bank Park, and rain is now expected to move in within the next hour. We’re still waiting on official word from MLB, but it should be coming any minute.

4:17 p.m. — MLB has released an official statement, confirming it is evaluating tonight’s forecast. Another update will be provided following a meeting at 5 p.m. ET.

3:39 p.m. — As Tyler Kepner, New York Times baseball columnist and Philadelphia native, pointed out, bad weather in Philly for Game 3 of the World Series is becoming a disappointing pattern…

3:30 p.m. — As MLB officials meet with the teams, the forecast has taken a turn for the worst. The chance of rain at 8 p.m. ET (right when the game is supposed to begin) is now listed at 99% on Weather.com. Delaying the first pitch probably won’t be an option with the rain expected to continue through the night. It’s safe to say there is an increasingly likely chance Game 3 will have to be postponed.

1:46 p.m. — According to one report, MLB officials will meet with management for both teams at 3:30 p.m. ET to determine whether the game can be played on Monday.

12:19 p.m. — The latest forecast suggests scattered rain showers that will grow more steady as the night goes on. That means a late start likely won’t help matters. However, as of right now, there’s been no word on whether the scheduled start time of 8:03 p.m. ET (7:03 p.m. CT) will be moved.
