Portugal vs. France live score, updates: Euro 2024 result as Ronaldo and Mbappe battle for semifinal spot

By | July 5, 2024

The Euro 2024 quarterfinals are here and it doesn’t get much bigger than Kylian Mbappe’s France going up against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.

In what is almost certainly the 39-year-old striker’s last European Championship, Ronaldo will be hoping he can take matters into his own hands and fire his country to a spot in the semifinal.

His tears of frustration, and then relief were clear for all to see as Portugal edged a penalty shootout victory over Slovenia in the last round, and the Selecao will need to be at their best if they are to end a dismal run of one win in their last 14 matches against France.

Mbappe has hardly lit up Euro 2024 himself, a broken nose playing a big part in that, but he’ll need to find his shooting boots too if France are to reach the semifinals for the fourth time in the last five major tournaments.

The Sporting News is following Portugal vs. France live, providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happen.

Portugal vs. France live updates, highlights from Euro 2024

25 mins: Pepe fouls Camavinga. Crossing position for Griezmann. Ronaldo gets up to make the aerial clearance.

22 mins: Mbappe engineers a bit of space with a burst of pace past Cancelo. Costa pushes his attempt away from the goalmouth and Vitinha tidies up.

20 mins: Saliba  gets his head on Fernandes’ latest corner. France manufacture a break, Griezmann picks up the pieces. Now Hernandez larrups one from 30 yards, Costa saves the stinging shot.

16 mins: Fernandes takes aim from 25 yards. Deflected wide off Saliba. Portugal cranking up the pressure a bit.

15 mins: Maignan takes an awful touch to haphazardly concede a corner. He atones by unfussily claiming  Fernandes’s delivery.

12 mins: Special stuff from Leao, who releases Mendes with an improvised backheel. The full-back wallops the cross beyond everyone. As you’d expect, Ronaldo is fairly unimpressed.

11 mins: Fernandes with a left-wing corner. He mishits it and Kolo Muani thumps away.

8 mins: Nuno Mendes is looking to get high up down the left whenever Portugal attack, which could have the knock-on effect of disrupting France’s midfield diamond. Tchouameni get back to clear his cross.

3 mins: It’s been a really bright start from France. Portugal have barely had the ball. Now Leao gets them forward but Hernandez clears.
