PSG is back in action at the Parc des Princes in Paris and it has a chance for some sweet revenge if the club can hand defending champion LOSC Lille another defeat.
Last season Lille pipped PSG for the Ligue 1 title by a single point, interrupting a run of three straight league titles for the Parisian side. But Lille has struggled after it lost several key pieces and its league-winning head coach during the offseason, finding itself 13 points behind runaway leaders PSG after just 11 matches (10th place). A loss in Paris would virtually erase any last hope of Lille mounting a final push to defend its title.
However, a win for Lille would have the opposite effect and it is getting PSG at a vulnerable moment with several key players missing due to injury or suspension. The big loss is star forward Kylian Mbappe (ear infection), who has five goals and four assists in 11 Ligue 1 matches. Lionel Messi also missed practice on Thursday after picking up a knock, but he will start in a false nine forward role.

A spotty PSG defense will have to contend with the Ligue 1 co-leading top scorer: Canadian striker Jonathan David (seven goals in 11 matches). U.S. winger Tim Weah will also start on the bench for Lille, which managed to defeat PSG in the one-off Champions Trophy 1-0 to kick off the 2021-22 campaign.

56th min.: What a chance for Lille! Yilmaz lofts the cross into the box and Donnarumma slaps the ball away before Jonathan Bamba can head it. Jonathan David can’t put home the follow-up when the ball gets to him.
52nd min.: Penalty kick shout for PSG, but no call from the ref. In the meantime, the broadcast continues to show the contact in the box on Yilmaz on the previous chance for Lille. That was Presnel Kimpembe with the studs-up sliding tackle to stop him.
47th min.: First chance for Lille! Jonathan Ikone to Jonathan David and Donnarumma comes off to stuff him. Then David takes the rebound and serves it to Yilmaz who can’t make contact with a defender converging.
46th min.: SUB – Mauro Icardi comes in for Lionel Messi. Wow. Messi did miss training on Thursday with what was called a ‘knock,’ but no one expected this early sub.

Halftime: PSG 0, Lille 1
Halftime: Deserved lead for the visitors at halftime. Lille has a gameplan that is working: jam up the middle, win the ball and push numbers forward when they win the ball. It worked to create several chances to start. As the half went on, the Lille attackers began switching positions and it was Burak Yilmaz wide left who delivered the cross that Jonathan David converted. PSG can’t get into a rhythm. Neymar needs 10 touches every time he gets the ball, Messi is getting the ball centrally in traffic every time. Instead of getting the ball wide, PSG is trying to go down the middle, playing into Lille’s hands. The boos have been justified to this point.
45th min.: On PSG’s last chance before the halftime whistle, Lionel Messi’s sends a free kick from 20 yards out high and wide of the target.
43rd min.: Two straight corners for Lille and the PSG crowd lets its team have it, whistling loud in protest of a subpar home performance so far.
40th min.: Chance for PSG! The home team is most dangerous when it suddenly accelerates with quick combinations and through passes. This ball is threaded in behind to Angel Di Maria who attempts to curl it around the Lille ‘keeper with his left foot, but it goes wide.
31st min.: Goal Lille! Burak Yilmaz is wide open on the left and his cross is touched into the goal by Jonathan David for his Ligue 1-leading 8th goal.
27th min.: PSG’s lines are tighter now and Lille is not having as easy a time getting in behind as it did in the opening 15 minutes. The Lillois could yet regret not converting one of those chances.
25th min.: Neymar is trying to weave some magic, but nothing of note just yet outside of this nutmeg:
23rd min.: First shot of the match by PSG. Lionel Messi, who so far hasn’t been effective at holding the ball and getting his teammates involved, finds Angel Di Maria for a shot that’s saved by the Lille ‘keeper.
14th min.: What a ball by Burak Yilmaz for Jonathan Ikone who can’t convert with Gigi Donnarumma at his mercy. Lille getting the early chances, but can’t convert.
12th min.: Lille has an attack-minded lineup and once the visitors win the ball, they’re flooding the attack with numbers. But the midfielders aren’t making the right passes (or the PSG defenders are doing a great job).
5th min.: It’s been back and forth with transitions going both ways. Reinildo stops one for PSG with a tackle that sends Angel Di Maria to the ground. He gets a yellow for stopping an attack, but the left back got all ball. That was not the right call by the ref.
1st min.: What a save by Gigi Donnarumma! Quick transition by Lille led by Jonathan Ikone, and forward Burak Yilmaz with a point-blank shot that the Italian ‘keeper has to dive to stop for a corner. Nothing comes of it.
