The eyes of the world will be on the controversial host nation as they kick off their home World Cup against Ecuador at the impressive 60,000-capacity Al Bayt Stadium.

Felix Sanchez’s Asian champions will take on their South American opponents, who are at the finals for the fourth time in their history.

Gustavo Alfaro’s Ecuador will have designs on reaching the knockout stages for the first time since 2006 and La Tri boast several faces familiar to Premier League fans, including Brighton trio Pervis Estupinan, Moises Caicedo and Jeremy Sarmiento

Ecuador strike early! Valencia in the man on the spot, nodding into an unguarded net after Al Sheeb in the Qatar goal makes a spectacle of himself trying to claim Estupinan’s free-kick.

The main question for the hosts could be whether wide-attacker Akram Afif will return up front, having missed the 1-0 win over Albania

Alfaro has options at multiple positions, but one player who does start is Enner Valencia, who is in sensational form at the club level with Fenerbahce. Valencia will lead the attack alongside  Michael Estrada.
