Raiders OT Delmar Glaze: What NFL Draft scouting reports said

By | April 27, 2024

The Las Vegas Raiders made their final selection of Day 2 of the 2024 NFL Draft in the third round, with the team picking up Maryland offensive tackle Delmar Glaze.

If you’re not sure exactly who that is, join the club. Now, I don’t pretend to be any semblance of a draft expert, but usually I have at least heard of draft prospects taken in the first few days. Glaze’s name did not come across my proverbial desk.

With that in mind, we can get a better understanding of what the Raiders are getting in their new offensive tackle that some believe can play guard — including general manager Tom Telesco — by taking a look at scouting reports on the Maryland product.

Projection: Round 5

Swing tackle prospect with some promising NFL traits but tape that comes up lacking against some of the better competition he faced. Glaze has started at both tackle spots but is inconsistent with his pass sets and change of direction. Rushers with speed can beat him to the top of the rush and cross his face for easy inside access once he starts oversetting. He has good hand strength and should improve in protection if he can use more direct, inside hands in his punch. He’s fairly fluid in space and fits the criteria of an inside/outside zone blocker with lead-pull potential. A move to guard might give him the best chance to become an NFL starter in the future.

Projection: Round 4

POSITIVES

— Patient, calculated pass-protector who plays centered and understands how to square up the rusher, create leverage with his hands and sustain it with good grip strength.

— Hand carriage in his pass set enables active, timely strikes to disrupt rushers and gain quick access into their frame.

— Alters set lines and landmarks in pass protection to manipulate spacing and dictate terms to rushers.

— Smoothly transitions into a firm anchor to harden his edges and solidify the pocket.

— Displaces and feeds the defensive tackle over as the drive man on double-teams with solid square power and pop on contact on angle-drive blocks.

— Statement performance against Ohio State edge-rusher Jack Sawyer this season.

NEGATIVES

— Adequate foot quickness and range on an island can create a short corner against premier speed off the edge.

— Doesn’t adjust his aiming points quickly enough against post-snap movement and gap exchanges across his face, causing leakage and penetration.

— Lack of twitch and range on an island showed up against Penn State edge-rusher Abdul Carter this season.

Projection: Day 2

Strengths:

  • Active feet

  • Awareness in space

  • Pop in hands

  • Technique

  • Base in pass pro

Concerns:

  • Play strength in run game

  • Fluidity in space

  • More consistent hand counters

  • Presents short corner vs. speed to outside shoulder

Projection: Day 2

Glaze’s uncertain utility as a run blocker clouds his early projection, and he likely functions best as a swing tackle in the immediate timeline. Nevertheless, Glaze has the high pass-blocking floor to be a quality spot-starter, and in time, he could grow to become a quality starter on either the left or right side.
