There is one more spot open in the NHL’s conference finals, and that could be decided Saturday night in Game 6 of the Hurricanes vs. Rangers second-round series.
Carolina holds a 3-2 series lead after grabbing a 3-1 win on Thursday night. It is one win away from advancing to the Eastern Conference finals against the Lightning. On the other side, New York is looking to fight off elimination and force a winner-take-all Game 7 on Monday.
The Rangers are no strangers to having their backs against the wall. In the first round, they battled back from down 3-1 in the series to defeat the Penguins, overcoming 2-0 deficits in Games 5 and 6 before coming from behind and beating Pittsburgh in overtime in Game 7.

The pattern the Hurricanes have fallen into works in the Rangers’ favor as well. Carolina has been dominant at home, owning a 7-0 record at PNC Arena; while playing away, the Canes have yet to pick up a single win, going 0-5 in these playoffs.
Will the trend continue and New York stays alive? Or can Carolina close out the series? The Sporting News will provide live updates and highlights from the potential series-clincher.

3rd period:
10:14 p.m.: And another penalty. Ian Cole getting called for interference so it’ll be 4 on 3 for the Rangers for 55 seconds.
10:12 p.m.: Play goes to 4 on 4 as Artemi Panarin is called for hooking.
10:09 p.m.: Early power play in the third for the Rangers as Slavin gets called for a double minor for high-sticking. Slavin was going for a puck in the air, missed and whacked Kreider in the face. 4-minute power play for New York.
10:05 p.m.: Third period is here, Rangers are 20 minutes away from forcing a Game 7 on Monday.
End 2nd period: Rangers 4, Hurricanes 2
9:44 p.m.: End of the 2nd, Rangers still hold a two-goal lead. Hurricanes sticking around and controlling the majority of play, but not by much. Rangers have taken advantage of their opportunities and Shesterkin has been excellent.
9:40 p.m.: Hurricanes pouring on the pressure in the offensive zone, but Rangers are able to fight it off for now. However, Shesterkin gets whistled for interference after stepping out of his crease to collide with Jarvis. It’s been all Carolina in these final few minutes of the middle frame.
9:38 p.m.: Mini breakaway for Chytil, but solid pad save by Kochetkov. Chytil looking for the hat trick.
9:37 p.m.: Rangers kill off the Kreider penalty, but not without a dangerous opportunity for Carolina. Shesterkin gets bailed out by the Rangers’ defense after falling to hold a shot that hit him in the glove. Under five minutes to go in the 2nd.
9:34 p.m.: Right off the face off from the Trocheck goal, Kreider called for hooking. Carolina with a chance to cut it to a one-goal game.
9:33 p.m.: GOAL! Vincent Trocheck cleans up the trash in front of the crease and the lead is cut to two yet again. Trocheck sends the puck ob net as he’s falling and the puck banks off Lindgren and in between Shesterkin’s legs.
9:32 p.m.: Interesting note: not only has Shesterkin been stellar in the crease, he is credited with two assists in the game as well. He has three this postseason.
Igor Shesterkin is the 5th goalie in playoff history with 2 assists in a single game.
He’s the first Rangers goalie with 2+ assists in ANY game since Mike Richter on Oct. 29, 1992 vs the Quebec Nordiques. pic.twitter.com/pn3ApkNHAm

9:28 p.m.: Shesterkin once again comes up with some big saves for the Rangers. Two jam attempts by Seth Jarvis, then a whack at the loose puck at the top of the crease from Sebastian Aho.
9:25 p.m.: Another great chance for the Rangers, but Kochetkov stays strong in the crease. Bad turnover by the Canes behind their own net leads to an opportunity for Ryan Lindgren to stuff it by Kochetkov, but no dice this time.
9:22 p.m.: GOAL! It’s Chytil again. Comes out from the corner and sends a backhand whistling over the shoulder of Kochetkov. Lead is back to three for New York.

9:16 p.m.: GOAL! Skjei gets the Canes on the board. Shesterkin never saw the shot coming from the top of the slot, Hurricanes cut the lead to 3-1.

9:12 p.m.: GOAL! Filip Chytil unleashes a wicked wrister top shelf by Raanta’s glove to make it 3-0. That’s the end of the night for Raanta as Pyotr Kochetkov comes in. Chytil had just missed on a 2 on 1 with Lafreniere, but would not be denied the second time.

9:09 p.m.: Puck is down for the second period.
End 1st Period: Rangers 2, Hurricanes 0
8:50 p.m.: End of the period, 2-0 Rangers. But make no mistake, the Hurricanes had the better chances. Shesterkin is the only reason they haven’t giving up a goal yet, while Raanta’s poor play at the other end is the reason they have the lead.
8:42 p.m.: Momentum is on the Hurricanes’ side. First it’s Nino Neiderreiter left alone in front, but Shesterkin with the five-hole save. Then it’s Jordan Martinook trying to stuff a shot by the Rangers goalie, but nothing doing for Carolina so far.
8:40 p.m.: Penalty is killed. The power play continues to struggle for the Hurricanes.
8:37 p.m.: Hurricanes get a power play as Jacob Trouba is whistled for tripping. Carolina has just one power play goal in the series, which came in Game 5.
8:28 p.m.: GOAL! Mike Zibanejad doubles the Rangers lead. He walks around Brady Skjei and beats Raanta five-hole on the rush, his fourth goal in as many games. Another weak goal allowed by the Carolina goaltender. 2-0 Rangers less than 10 minutes into Game 6.

8:26 p.m.: First power play of the night goes to the Rangers. Brendan Smith called for high-sticking after his stick gets up in Alexis Lafreniere’s face.
8:21 p.m.: Right after the Motte goal, Andrew Copp gets a chance, cutting to the front of the net, missing high but the shot hits Jaccob Slavin and falls into the crease. Carolina was able to clear the puck, but lots of action through the first eight minutes.
8:20 p.m.: GOAL! Moments after the Aho breakaway chance, Tyler Motte comes down on the rush and gets a shot to just get by Raanta’s armpit. One that the Hurricanes goalie would definitely want back, but the Rangers capitalize first.
Shesterkin starts it, Motte finishes it… What a start for the @NYRangers! 🔥#StanleyCup | #NoQuitInNY pic.twitter.com/Ur91y42VUr

8:19 p.m.: First Grade-A chance is a Sebastian Aho breakaway. Gets in all alone, but saved by Shesterkin’s blocker.
