Manchester United will continue their preparations for the return of English and European football following the World Cup, as they prepare to face La Liga side Real Betis in their second mid-season friendly. The Red Devils began their Spanish training camp with a match against relegation-threatened Cadiz, losing 4-2 in a match where they fielded a very youthful side in the second half.
United’s first competitive game back after the World Cup takes place in just 11 days time, as they’ve been drawn to play Burnley in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, December 21. This friendly therefore, against a side sat sixth in La Liga, will likely see the Red Devils field a side which has a much closer resemblance to their first-choice XI – minus their players still competing for glory in Qatar, of course.

Which players are available for Manchester United?
Of the 14 players contracted to United who departed for Qatar in November, one — Cristiano Ronaldo — has since left the club entirely, while six are on their way back to Manchester following elimination. Facundo Pellistri (Uruguay) and Christian Eriksen (Denmark) were knocked out in the group stages, while Tyrell Malacia’s Netherlands and Fred, Antony and Casemiro of Brazil all saw their tournaments come to an end in the quarter-finals.
None of these six are likely to join up with the squad until the Red Devils return to England ahead of the restart, but United still have several big names to call on in this game. Martin Dubravka played the full match against Cadiz, but first-choice David de Gea returns between the sticks, with the Spain side he missed out on selection for also heading home, having lost on penalties to Morocco in the last eight.
Real Betis vs. Manchester United lineups
Los Verdiblancos saw five of their first-team squad head to Qatar, with three – Argentines German Pezzella and Guido Rodriguez and Portugal’s William Carvalho – still active in the tournament. Andres Guardado and Youssouf Sabaly, eliminated with Mexico and Senegal respectively, are heading home, but neither will take to the field for a Betis side that will likely be close to their first-choice 11.
Real Betis predicted lineup (4-3-3 right to left): 13. Rui Silva — 2. Martin Montoya, 6. Victor Ruiz, 19. Luis Felipe, 15. Alex Moreno — 10. Sergio Canales, 4. Paul Akouokou, 28. Rodri Sanchez — 11. Luis Henrique, 9. Borja Iglesias, 8. Nabil Fekir.

Scott McTominay captain Manchester United against Cadiz, starting in a strong three-man midfield alongside Donny van de Beek and Zidane Iqbal. Anthony Martial started up front, and calmly dispatched a penalty as he responded to not being included in France’s World Cup squad. He’s expected to start this game too, as United edge closer to the return of competitive football.
