Real Madrid vs. PSG live score, updates, highlights & lineups from Champions League

By | March 9, 2022

Real Madrid head into this crucial tie with the slimmest of deficits to overturn, after PSG won the first leg 1-0 in Paris. The Spanish side won’t be overawed, with Real as experienced as any team on the continent with what it takes to succeed in Europe.

Toni Kroos is available for the hosts, but the absence of Casemiro means they won’t be able to pick their regular midfield trio. The big news for PSG is that Kylian Mbappe starts despite picking up a foot injury in training.

Real Madrid have reacted well to losing the first leg, with three consecutive wins in domestic league play. Their 4-1 win over Real Sociedad on the weekend was the perfect confidence booster heading into this decisive showdown. PSG, however, have lost two away games in a row in the French league. Having not won at the Bernabeu in the last three attempts, they will be looking to right that record here.

Of course, Madrid have won this competition more times than anyone else, and Carlo Ancelotti is a specialist in European success. In addition, PSG’s record in European competition has always been underwhelming, relative to their ambitions. Tonight is a chance to change that narrative.

Sporting News is following the match live and providing live score updates, commentary.

Goals:

PSG — Mbappé (Neymar) — 39th min.

(All times Eastern)

45th min: Marquinhos steps into midfield and lifts the ball into the path of Mbappé, who flicks it into the path of Messi. It’s on his right and he tries to shift it onto his left, but the defender stands his ground well.

44th min: Nacho is booked for a cynical foul on Hakimi, while Vinicius is also booked. PSG had a free kick on the right and take it short before working it towards the box. Verratti chips the ball in from the right channel but Real Madrid clear for now.

42nd min: Modric shoots from the left hand side. It’s far out, but the low shot has some venom behind it. Donnarumma holds onto it. PSG go back up the other end and work it from Mbappé to Neymar to Messi, but the ball to Messi doesn’t quite get out from under his feet.

39th min: GOAL!

This time it counts! Real Madrid have the ball high up, but lose it. The ball breaks to Neymar and PSG manage what they’ve threatened all game. Neymar sweeps it up the pitch with his first touch and Mbappé latches onto it. He bears down on goal and gives Courtois the eyes, before firing in at his near post. PSG in the driving seat here.

37th min: Real Madrid have improved. They have the longest spell on the ball they’ve managed for a while. It’s worked in from the left for Valverde to shoot from outside the area. It’s blocked, and it was going well wide. The ball is worked out to the right and crossed in, Benzema rises well, unmarked, but heads wide as he tries to steer the ball back across goal.

34th min: We have a goal, but it’s disallowed. Mendes runs down the left into space and receives a long ball, but he’s offside. The move ends Mbappé sidefooting home at Courtois’ near post, but the flag is up quickly. Benzema’s header is saved at the other end. PSG were beginning to turn the screw, but that could be the reprieve that Real need.

32nd min: Close! Great link up between Neymar and Messi, with the Brazilian finding the Argentine on the left hand side of the six yard box. Courtois is out quickly and Messi lifts the ball over him. It’s a square ball that bounces across goal, with nobody to turn it in. The rotation and combinations between the PSG front three is mesmerising to watch at times.

29th min: Carvajal stretches to stop a Messi pass from deep reaching Neymar through on goal. Real Madrid attack and Marquinhos, somewhat inexplicably, flicks a pass in his own penalty area into the path of Vinicius, whose pass across goal doesn’t find anyone. Alaba needs treatment, but he’s back on his feet.

24th min: Whistles from the crowd as PSG hold onto the ball for a while. In possession, Hakimi plays essentially as a winger, with Messi playing almost as a midfielder, Neymar up front, Mbappé on the left, and Danilo covering for Hakimi on the right. Benzema forces a very good save from Donnarumma as he looks to bend the ball from distance.

22nd min: Hakimi gets the better of Vinicius again, before PSG play their way up the pitch. It ends with Neymar receiving the ball on the edge of the area and, in significant space, having time to shift it onto his left and shoot across goal. He doesn’t get enough on it to really trouble Courtois.

18th min: An impressive flick from Benzema, who backheels a dropping long ball to prevent it from going out for a throw in. Mendes is down, holding his ankle after contesting the aerial ball with Asensio. He’s back up on his feet though, and dancing through defenders before PSG lose the ball. The pace has left the game for the moment, as Paredes tries a shot from outside the area. From dead centre, he slices his shot over the bar.

15th min: A brief stoppage after Carvajal catches Varratti in the knee, with both players sliding in to control a loose ball. PSG attacks, with Neymar carrying the ball and sliding it out to Mendes on the left. He lifts a cross across goal that evades everyone.

13th min: Vinicius Júnior is on the attack again. Hakimi sees him off for now, with the help of some lenient refereeing. The ball breaks to Carbajal who shoots wide from outside the area. At the other end, the ball breaks to Mbappé, on the left but inside the area and a little closer to centre. He shoots, but Courtois is out quickly to smother the chance.

9th min: The atmosphere is raucous already, with a few tasty challenges only stoking the fire. Great work from Vinicius on the left who turns Hakimi inside out before finding Benzema on the edge of the box. Benzema tries to make space for himself but the ball is stolen off his toes by Lionel Messi. He finds Neymar near the halfway line, who plays the ball behind Madrid’s high line for Mbappé’s run down the left. From a tight angle, and not close to goal, Mbappé shoots but it’s a comfortable save. Before all that, Paredes was booked. Now we have a game on our hands.

4th min: The visitors don’t feel like they’re up to the tempo of the hosts yet, with Real Madrid winning the ball back in midfield a few times already. Vinicius’ cross results in an acrobatic effort from Asensio, which is blocked, but the French side have been very much second best in the first five minutes.

2nd min: We’re underway, and Real Madrid don’t take long before threatening. Carvajal’s low ball into the box bounces around. You feel like the hosts are up for this, but Militão has gone down after clashing heads with Kroos. He’s back on his feet now.

2:50 p.m.: With ten minutes to go, you can feel the atmosphere in the stadium. The home team will need to take the game to their visitors and, for the away side, attack may be the best form of defence. I’m on the edge of my seat already.

2:39 p.m.: The pressure is on both teams going into this game. Perfection is always demanded of Real Madrid in Europe, while PSG carry an advantage into the game, and will be expected to see that advantage through to the quarterfinals. With how much money the Parisians have spent in recent years, a European trophy surely has to come soon.

2:17 p.m.: A performance from this man would go a long way to seeing PSG through to the quarterfinals tonight. The visitors have all three of their stars on show, they’ll be hoping for fireworks.

1:45 p.m.: Team bus arrivals are big in Spain:

1:37 p.m.: Will we see Lionel Messi light up the Bernabeu one more time like he used to?

Real Madrid vs PSG lineups

The hosts go into the game with two confirmed absentees. Left back Ferland Mendy and defensive midfielder Casemiro are both suspended. The pair are big losses for Ancelotti’s team. Nacho will fill in at left back, while Valverde was preferred over Camavinga to replace Casemiro. Toni Kroos returned to training and starts.

Real Madrid starting lineup (4-3-3, left to right): 1-Courtois (GK) — 6-Nacho, 4-Alaba, 3-Militão, 2-Carvajal — 8-Kroos, 15-Valverde, 10-Modric — 20-Vinicius Júnior, 9-Benzema (capt.), 11-Asensio

Real Madrid subs (12): 13-Lunin, 12-Marcelo, 5-Vallejo, 19-Ceballos, 17-L. Vazquez, 25-Camavinga, 7-Hazard, 22-Isco, 24-Mariano, 16-Jovic, 18-Bale, 21-Rodrygo

Kylian Mbappe was a major doubt for this game, after Idrissa Gueye stood on his foot during training. He won’t miss out on the match that the world will be watching and he starts. Leandro Paredes was doubtful, but he also starts as Mauricio Pochettino goes with his best lineup.

PSG starting lineup (4-3-3, left to right): 50-Donnarumma (GK) — 25-Mendes, 3-Kimpembe, 5-Marquinhos (capt.), 2-Hakimi — 6-Verratti, 15-Danilo, 8-Paredes — 10-Neymar, 7-Mbappé, 30-Messi
