Just four innings into the Boston Red Sox’s Tuesday night game against the Cleveland Guardians, starting pitcher Garrett Whitlock was removed from the game and was replaced by Joely Rodriguez.
Whitlock had only thrown 54 pitches and given up two runs at the time of his removal.
The team has not shared why he came out of the contest.
Rodriguez gave up a solo home run to the second batter he faced and allowed three total (two earned) in the fifth.
UPDATE: According to the Boston Globe’s Julian Mack, Whitlock left the game due to left oblique tightness.
