Months of tension and heated buildup will be settled in the ring on Friday as Sandy Ryan and Mikaela Mayer face off. The fight for Ryan’s WBO welterweight title takes place at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater and airs on ESPN+ in the U.S.
Ryan (7-1-1) beat Marie Pier Houle in April 2023 for the WBO title. Following a controversial draw against Jessica McCaskill to determine the undisputed champion, she rebounded by beating down Terri Harper.
Mayer (19-2) is a former IBF and WBO super featherweight champion, losing the belts against rival Alycia Baumgardner. After a run at lightweight, Mayer lost against Natasha Jonas in January for the IBF welterweight title. She looks to try again to take over welterweight by holding gold in another division.
Mayer and trainer Kay Koroma went separate ways after it was revealed that he would help train Ryan for the fight. The former has brought emotion into the buildup but is still poised. Ryan believes she has the physical and mental edge to win the fight.

“I respect her highly as a fighter, of what she’s achieved in the sport, but I will put it out there that as a human being, as a person, I don’t respect her at all,” Ryan said via Daily Mail. “The way she’s gone about this fight, the talk that she’s done. She’s talking a load of B.S. and not even relatable to the fight, just not professional at all. I just don’t respect that, so I’ll just handle the business come September 27.
“She’s thinking that I’m not mentally there, so I’m really in her head, and she’s really not been in my head this camp. I’ve just made sure I’ve physically and mentally prepared myself to beat her up.”
