Seahawks urged to sign $36 million Cowboys All-Pro lineman in free agency

By | November 22, 2024

The Seattle Seahawks offensive line may finally be turning the corner. This past week star right tackle Abe Lucas made his return to the lineup for the first time this season and performed well, as did Olu Oluwatimi in his first start at center in 2024. Seattle also has a strong starter at left tackle in Charles Cross, who’s enjoying a breakout year.

However, the Seahawks still have what might be the worst starting guard combo in the NFL right now in Laken Tomlinson and Anthony Bradford, both of whom have struggled the entire season – especially in pass protection. If Seattle is going to upgrade those spots odds are they will have to spend money in free agency, because general manager John Schneider’s track record drafting offensive linemen is far too shaky to rely on.

As long as they need to sign a good guard, they might as well shoot for the moon. On that note, Field Gulls has suggested that they might sign Dallas Cowboys right guard Zack Martin, one of seven offensive line options they listed.

Martin (6-foot-4, 315 pounds) might be past his prime at 34 years old. However, he’s still one of the best interior offensive linemen in the game. Martin has earned nine Pro Bowl nominations and seven first-team All-Pro honors, including four of the last five seasons.

Martin has tons of experience, with 162 career starts under his belt. That would be invaluable for what should be a very young Seahawks offensive line unit in 2025, assuming they move on from Tomlinson at the end of the year.

The biggest obstacle is of course the price-tag. Signing Martin would not come cheap – his current contract averages over $18 million per season, which ranks him fourth among all right guards in the NFL. That clashes with the team-building philosophy of Schneider, who has infamously claimed that guards are both overdrafted and overpaid.

Whether he’s right or not winning doesn’t come cheap – and the guard situation is bad enough that it can spoil the rest of the good things that the Seahawks have going on offense. If Martin hits the market Seattle should definitely make an effort to bring him in.
