Sean McVay sidesteps questions on future with Rams as rebuild reluctance reports emerge

Exit stage right?

The Rams finished up a disappointing 2023 season on Sunday afternoon, losing to the Seahawks to cap off an ugly 5-12 campaign, and an uglier Super Bowl defense this year.

The brains behind the Rams’ recent success, Sean McVay, may be on his way out, the first domino of what could be a very messy Rams offseason.

“I’m not thinking about that right now, nothing’s changed kind of from where we left things off on Friday,” McVay said. “I’m right here, right now, and we’ll deal with that stuff at a later time.”

McVay declined to answer any questions surrounding his future with the organization, instead opting to try and keep focus on Sunday’s loss.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio added some more detail to McVay’s potential departure on “Football Night in America,” saying that McVay doesn’t want to deal with the presumed lengthy rebuild that’s coming down the pike sooner rather than later.

“There’s a growing sense that he will (step down). My understanding is it’s not because of burnout or he wants to get into TV, he won a Super Bowl and now he’s facing a multi-year rebuild that he just doesn’t want to be a part of,” Florio reports.

Reports indicate that McVay will take some time in the coming days to decide his future, with a decision expected soon. NFL Network’s Peter Schrager says that McVay is truly undecided and has dialogue with the Rams over the last week.

McVay, himself, said as much on Monday:

McVay has been rumored to be connected to TV jobs in the past, with the head coach flirting with networks before signing a contract extension with the Rams after 2022. That contract kept him locked into LA through 2026, alongside GM Les Snead.

Now, it looks like a Hollywood ending may be in the cards for McVay — just not in the traditional sense.
