Defending Serie A champions AC Milan are still at the top of the Serie A table alongside a revamped Napoli side and a feisty Atalanta squad. All are on 14 points after Matchweek 6 results, but Napoli and Atalanta have the edge in the goal difference department.
That sets up a juicy matchup on Sept. 18 when Napoli visit AC Milan’s San Siro stadium, where they won 1-0 last season. It will be the first trip to the renowned venue for new Napoli hero Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, while Milan’s influential winger Rafael Leao will miss the match to serve a red card suspension.
Atalanta had a chance to snag the top spot outright last week, but they were held to a home draw against Cremonese. Udinese, Inter, Lazio, Roma, and Juventus are all in the hunt, although Juve’s bonkers 2-2 draw with Salernitana leaves them four points adrift.
Monza are still rooted to the bottom of the table, but they picked up their first point in Serie A by holding on to a 1-1 road draw at fellow promoted side Lecce.

Serie A title race for Scudetto
Defending champions AC Milan and a rejuvenated Napoli are two of the most in-form teams among the preseason favorites. They’re on equal points after six matches and they happen to face off at the San Siro on Sunday in a matchup that will see the winner earn the status of title favorite heading into October.
Surprise side Atalanta are even on points with them, but after a disappointing home draw to Cremonese last time out, they have a big chance to make amends against fifth-place AS Roma on Sunday in the undercard to Milan-Napoli.
Inter Milan (two losses in six) are scuffling along through the start of their campaign, as are perennial favorites Juventus. Lazio are hanging around as well, and their fans will be expecting nothing less than a win at promoted side Cremonese after suffering a 5-1 beating in Denmark during midweek European action.

Serie A European places
As one of the top-ranked nations in Europe, Italy’s Serie A has four automatic berths for the UEFA Champions League which go to the top four teams. There are also two tickets to the Europa League (5th place and the Coppa Italia winner) and one to the Conference League (sixth place).
Italy’s current participants in the UEFA Champions League — Milan, Inter, Napoli, and Juventus — are the favorites to once again reclaim their spot in the prestigious competition next season and finish in Serie A’s top four. But it should be a tighter race given the quality of the other challengers.
Atalanta, Roma, and Lazio likely feel they have what it takes to get into the Top 4 Champions League zone, while Udinese could prove to be the surprise entrant if they can sustain their strong early form.
The consolation prize for fifth place and sixth place are the berths in the Europa League and Conference League, respectively. And if the winner of the Coppa Italia happens to be a top-four team, then the Europa League berth that comes with that trophy will instead go to sixth place, with the Conference League spot handed down to seventh place.

Serie A relegation
The bottom three spots in the table are the trap doors that send those finishers down to the second-tier Serie B at season’s end.
The three promoted sides from Serie B — Lecce, Cremonese, and Monza — are considered immediate candidates to go right back down, but Lecce have gotten off to the stronger start and are currently outside the bottom six after a big win at Salernitana.
Meanwhile, bottom side Monza face the prospect of a visit from an angry Juventus, who are coming off a second straight Champions League loss in midweek.
Sampdoria look to be in for another difficult season after finishing just six points above the drop zone last season. Spezia also survived last season for a third straight campaign in the Italian top flight, but they’re just three points off the relegation zone.
