Six Nations 2024 schedule, results, standings, format and prize money for rugby union tournament

By | February 24, 2024

England made it two wins out of two in the 2024 Six Nations as they came from behind to beat Wales 16-14 in a tense Twickenham encounter.

As was the case in Rome last weekend, Steve Borthwick’s World Cup semifinalists were behind at the break but Fraser Dingwall’s try reduced the deficit to a point and George Ford’s penalty proved to be the difference between the sides.

Two loses in as many outings feels like a very tough return for a youthful Wales side, who were pipped by a point against Scotland in Cardiff last week. Gregor Townsend’s men suffered last-gasp heartache of their own in week two, with a controversial TMO call allowing France to hang on to a 20-16 scoreline at Murrayfield.

Ireland began the defence of their Six Nations title with an authoritative 38-17 victory over France in Marseille and followed up with a dominant display against Italy. A stunning 31-7 win over Wales means Andy Farrell’s side are just two wins away from back-to-back Grand Slams

What is the Six Nations 2024 scoring system?

Four points are awarded for each win, two for a draw, and zero for a loss — but there are some bonus points up for grabs.

If a team scores four tries or more in a game, they will be awarded a bonus point. Additionally, losing teams are awarded a bonus point if their margin of defeat is seven points or fewer.

This means a winning team could take home either four or five points, while a losing team could earn zero, one or two.

What is a Grand Slam in Six Nations?

There is another means of getting some bonus points on the board. If a team wins all five of their matches, thereby completing what is known as a ‘Grand Slam’, then they are awarded three extra points. This has been achieved in 12 of the previous 22 editions of the Six Nations.

In 2023, Ireland finished top of the standings on 27 points, having won all of their matches and earned seven bonus points by achieving the Grand Slam and via the try-scoring reward system.

Six Nations 2024 prize money

As was the case in 2023, the teams will divide a prize pot of £16.5 million. The winning nation is guaranteed £5m, with prize money diminishing as the positions drop and concluding with £1m for the sixth-placed team.

Six Nations 2024 guaranteed prize money

Winner: £5m

Runner-up: £3.5m

Third place: £2.5m

Fourth place: £2m

Fifth place: £1.5m

Sixth place: £1m

That accounts for £15.5m of the prize pot. The remaining £1m is reserved as a Grand Slam bonus if a team completes the clean sweep. If there is no Grand Slam, that prize money is split equally (£200,000) each between the remaining five nations.
