Spain vs Germany live: World Cup score, highlights, result from 2022 Group E match

By | November 27, 2022

Four-time World Cup winners Germany will aim to bounce back from their shock loss to Japan when they take on Spain in Group E as the European heavyweights in Qatar.

Die Mannschaft were the victims of one of the tournament’s major upsets as Japan came back to beat them 2-1 in their opening match. The Samurai Blue were brought crashing back down to earth with a 1-0 defeat earlier on Sunday to Costa Rica side that Spain demolished 7-0.

Luis Enrique’s men can effectively secure qualification with another win and they would have the double satisfaction of sending Germany closer to a second consecutive group-stage exit.

They finished last in their group in Russia 2018 four years after winning the World Cup in 2014. Spain were crowned champions in 2010.

Spain vs Germany live updates, highlights from 2022 World Cup

3 hrs from kickoff: Ferran Torres scored twice in Spain’s opening rout and he famously went one better against Germany when the sides met in the Nations League in 2020, plundering a hat-trick in a 6-0 demolition.

3 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: Gavi scored the pick of Spain’s seven goals against Costa Rica to cap a sparkling all-round performance. Will we see more of the same tonight from the Barcelona teenager or, as some reports in Spain have suggested, will Luis Enrique taking him out of the firing line as he shuffles his pack? The Spain boss rarely rests on an unchanged line-up, although keeping one that won 7-0 must be sorely tempting.

4 hrs from kickoff: The upsets keep coming for the European heavyweights in this competition. Belgium have just been deservedly beaten 2-0 by Morocco. Find out how that one unfolded here.

4 hrs 25 mins from kickoff: There was a bit of a sensation earlier on in Group E as Costa Rica bounced back from their 7-0 spanking by Spain to upset Germany’s upsetters Japan 1-0. You’d have got long odds on all of Iran, Australia and Costa Rica winning their second matches after shipping such heavy defeats in their openers.

The upshot is Germany would not be eliminated, even if they lose tonight. However, in that scenario, they would have to rely on an already-qualified Spain doing them a favour by beating Japan. Alternatively, if Hansi Flick’s men can turn things around and win, all four teams in Group E would head into the final matchday with three points apiece, teeing up the prospect of all sorts of mayhem.

4 hrs 45 mins from kickoff: Here’s the rallying cry from former Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn.

5 hrs from kickoff: Spain did some serious damage against Germany the last time they met, though that was before Hansi Flick took over.

Spain vs Germany lineups, team news

Spain manager Luis Enrique hasn’t shared any starters, but the Spanish press are speculating based on his comments that Dani Carvajal (for Cesar Azpilicueta) and Nico Williams (for Dani Olmo) are two potential changes for a manager that rarely repeats lineups.

Eric Garcia coming in for Rodri in central defence and allowing the Man City man to line up in midfield (potentially in place of Gavi) is another option that’s being entertained by the media. It’ll also be Alvaro Morata or Marco Asensio at center forward.

Spain projected (4-3-3, right to left): 23-Unai Simon (GK) — 20-Dani Carvajal, 16-Rodri, 24-Aymeric Laporte, 18-Jordi Alba — 9-Gavi, 5-Sergio Busquets, 26-Pedri — 12-Nico Williams, 10-Marco Asensio, 11-Ferran Torres

Dynamic Bayern Munich attacker Leroy Sane sat out the loss to Japan with a knee injury and although he resumed training in recent days, it seems fairly certain he won’t start and instead could potentially help as a substitute.

Media reports in Germany indicate that Niklas Sule, who filled in at right-back against Japan, could move back into central defence with Thilo Kehrer regaining his natural right-back spot.

Also, the speculation favours the Bayern central-mdfield pairing of Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich with Ilkay Gundogan in more of an attacking role behind the forward. And that central striker could be Thomas Muller in order to leave Kai Havertz as an option off the bench.

Germany projected (4-2-3-1, right to left): 1-Manuel Neuer (GK) — 5-Thilo Kehrer, 15-Niklas Sule, 2-Antonio Rudiger, 3-David Raum — 6-Joshua Kimmich, 8-Leon Goretzka  — 10-Serge Gnabry, 21-Ilkay Gundogan, 14-Jamal Musiala — 13-Thomas Muller

Spain vs Germany live stream, TV channel

This was always going to be the must-watch of the World Cup group stage, but the stakes make it an even tastier matchup. After a shock 2-1 loss to Japan, Germany will be desperate for all three points against a Spain side that looked like a legitimate candidate to win the World Cup in their 7-0 obliteration of Costa Rica.

A loss against Spain would likely result in an embarrassing group-stage elimination for the Germans, while victory would virtually lock up a knockout round berth for Spain. If Germany were to prevail, it would set up a fascinating final day in Group E with qualification scenarios coming down to overall goal difference or other tiebreakers.
