The Pittsburgh Steelers are still trying to figure out their quarterback situation for the 2025 season. The team selected Ohio State’s Will Howard in Round 6 of the draft, but the 23-year-old needs time to develop and isn’t ready to be a starting signal-caller. Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson are the other quarterbacks currently on the roster in Pittsburgh.
The Steelers’ pursuit for a starting quarterback has been narrowed down to just a few names, with Aaron Rodgers being the primary target. The future Hall of Famer has been linked to Pittsburgh since the first day of free agency in March but hasn’t signed with Mike Tomlin’s squad despite all other options being off the table.
Rodgers could end up retiring instead of playing another year, but NFL Rumors’ Logan Ulrich predicts the 41-year-old will eventually sign with the Steelers this offseason.
“Plenty has been written about Rodgers and the Steelers, so I won’t belabor things too much more here. It’s safe to say the two are the best match for either at this point, with Pittsburgh representing Rodgers’ best (only?) chance to continue his career and Rodgers representing the most established passer the Steelers could land to guide the team in 2025,” Ulrich wrote.
Though Rodgers struggled to lead the New York Jets to consistent winning in 2024, the veteran actually had a solid statistical season, tossing 28 touchdowns to 11 interceptions with a 63% completion rate. The four-time league MVP is still a competent signal-caller who can lead a team to the playoffs and possibly make some noise in the postseason with a capable supporting cast.
Pittsburgh has run out of options at quarterback, so signing Rodgers is the only move that makes sense. The ten-time Pro Bowler could prove to be an upgrade over Russell Wilson and would also be a nice mentor for Howard and other young players on Arthur Smith’s offense. Additionally, joining the Steelers would give Rodgers a shot at winning a Super Bowl in the final years of his illustrious career.
At some point, this move is bound to happen. Retirement is still a possibility for Rodgers, but it feels like the multiple-time All-Pro should end his career in the Steel City and try to win a championship with Tomlin.
