Sterling Shepard injury update: Giants WR suffers non-contact knee injury; Season likely over, report says

By | September 27, 2022

The Giants were handed their first loss of the season on Monday night, but a late loss on the field could be the bigger.

Wide receiver Sterling Shepard, Giants stalwart at wideout, was injured late in the Week 3 “Monday Night Football” matchup vs. the Cowboys on a non-contact play.

Shepard appeared to injure his left leg on the final Giants’ offensive possession of the game, and would be carted off following the injury. A diagnosis on the knee injury wasn’t immediately available, but one report says that his season is likely over.

That would be bad knows for a Giants’ wide receiver room, which was already in a state of flux even before Shepard’s injury. Kenny Golladay is rumored to be on the trade block and 2021 first-round pick Kadarius Toney has not been able to earn his way onto the field consistently.

Shepard’s injury could force one or either onto the field in the coming week’s — depend on how severe it is.

Here’s the latest on Shepard’s injury:

Sterling Shepard injury update

Late in the fourth quarter of the Giants-Cowboys “MNF” matchup, Shepard was injured on a non-contact play. The wideout would clutch his left knee and later be loaded onto a cart to exit the game.

An official update for Shepard wasn’t immediately available. Following the game, Giants head coach Brian Daboll said Shepard would undergo tests and would have a clearer picture of the scope of the injury on Tuesday morning.

According to ESPN’s Jordan Ranaan, Shepard suffered a “serious” left knee injury, and his official diagnosis should come down on Tuesday.

It’s unclear what exactly Shepard’s injury is, but if it’s severe, it’s the latest in a long line of injuries to the wideout’s lower half. In 2021, Shepard suffered an Achilles tear in Week 15, and in 2020, dealt with turf toe and was placed on Injured Reserve.

Shepard has also dealt with rib injury and multiple concussions in his career.
