Team USA will look to remain perfect in the First Round Group stage with a win over Jordan.

The United States has gotten out to a 2-0 start at the 2023 FIBA World Cup after defeating New Zealand by 27 points and Greece by 28 points.

Team USA has already qualified for the Second Round Group Stage where Lithuania and Montenegro eagerly await their chances to get a shot at the No. 1 ranked team in the tournament, but this contest still plays a role in the United States’ future at the World Cup.

Since records carry over to the next Group Stage, it is important that Team USA takes care of business to advance to 3-0 before the tournament field is cut in half from 32 countries to 16.

Second quarter:

5:08 a.m. — Malek Kannan turns it over and tries to stop the USA fastbreak, but after the officials review the play, it’s an unsportsmanlike foul. Bobby Portis will go to the line. 

5:05 a.m. — Hollis-Jefferson goes down rolling his left ankle on a drive to the basket. He gets up gingerly and shoots free throws and will stay in the game. 

5:02 a.m. — Jordan has come out of the break with a renewed sense of energy as they start the period on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 11. 

End of first quarter: USA 31, Jordan 12

Anthony Edwards outscored Jordan by himself in the first quarter with 13 points as the USA go into the break with a 19-point lead. 

The ball movement has been crisp through the first 10 minutes with seven assists on 12 made field goals. 

4:55 a.m. — This small-ball lineup picks up the pace for Team USA as they immediately get out in transition. 

4:53 a.m. — Steve Kerr goes to the bench, bringing in Austin Reaves, Brandon Ingram, and Paolo Banchero as they go to their smaller lineup with the Magic forward at the five.

The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup tipped off on Friday, Aug. 25. The Group Stages will run through Sept. 3 with the single-elimination knockout stage beginning on Sept. 5.
