Tony Romo salary breakdown: How much does CBS announcer make under massive contract?

By | February 6, 2021

Tony Romo’s was a seamless transition from the gridiron to the broadcast booth, one that has paid off handsomely for the former Cowboys quarterback.

Romo — who retired from Dallas in April 2017 before joining CBS as its lead color analyst the following season — quickly found he had a talent for in-game analysis. He has earned widespread praise for his calls, not only for the energy he provides alongside play-by-play man Jim Nantz, but also because of his knowledge of the game, courtesy of his 14-year NFL career.

Romo’s knack for breaking down offensive formations and predicting plays pre-snap quickly made him one of the hottest commodities in the broadcast business, something CBS was seemingly aware of when it made him the highest-paid NFL analyst in history earlier this year.

Here’s a breakdown of Romo’s contract, annual salary and net worth after signing his massive CBS contract:

Tony Romo’s net worth in 2020

Romo is worth $70 million, per Celebrity Net Worth. That said, it’s not entirely certain what Romo’s actual net worth is. He made more than $127 million playing in the NFL and has secured endorsements from Corona, Starter, Pizza Hut, DIRECTV, Panini, Topps and Under Armour. But he is also a known philanthropist, working with several charities over the years.

What is Tony Romo’s salary by year?

CBS in February extended its contract with Romo, reportedly offering him $17 million annually (per Andrew Marchand of the New York Post). Marchand later clarified his report, saying the deal is worth $17.5 annually — or $18 million when considering “all the perks.” That deal is worth more, annually, than the entirety of his rookie contract at CBS: $10 million over three years.

Romo didn’t just break a personal record by signing his new deal. Per Marchand, the previous record-holder for annual salary for an analyst was John Madden, who secured $8 million a year in the early 2000s, well after he had become a broadcasting star. Even when accounting for inflation, Madden’s deal would have been worth $14 million annually in 2020.

Tony Romo contract details

Marchand has reported that Romo’s deal will take place over the course of 10 years, giving him $175 million to $180 million. However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that CBS locked Romo up for only three years, and that any extension is predicated on whether the NFL will extend its rights deal with CBS (the current deal is locked up until 2022). Should that happen, CBS will reportedly add another seven years to Romo’s contract — even if the NFL’s rights deal is shorter.

How much does Tony Romo make per game?

Romo stands to make more than $1 million for each of his 16 regular-season games in 2020: $1.09 million per broadcast. Extrapolated to include CBS’ four postseason broadcasts, then Romo’s deal is worth $875,000 per game called.

How much did Tony Romo make in the NFL?

According to Spotrac, Romo made $127.4 million in total during his NFL career, averaging $9.1 million per season. Romo only made more than $17 million in three seasons: $17.5 million in 2007; $25.5 million in 2013; and $17 million in ’15. Romo’s current contract would eclipse that total in just over seven seasons.

Tony Romo’s house

Romo moved his family to the Bent Tree Country Club in North Dallas in 2016 to be closer to the Cowboys’ recently moved headquarters; when he moved, he placed his former Irving, Texas, home on the market for $1.05 million (though it is now listed at $994,100 at realtor.com). His former home was a 5,551-square-foot, Mediterranean-style residence in the gated community of Cottonwood Valley.

His former home, built in 1993, had six bedrooms, four baths, a pool, spa and entertaining space in the backyard.
