Simone Biles is on a roll.
Inarguably the greatest gymnast in the sport’s long and sordid history, all eyes were fixed firmly on Biles as she made her return to elite competition in the U.S. Gymnastics Championships. Some believed she would string together a resoundingly dominant display. Others wondered whether the 26-year-old still had something left in the tank.
The truth typically lies somewhere in between. In Biles’ case, though, the numbers make for their own tale. Biles has raced beyond her competition, frolicking through the air with the sort of swift elegance that earned her all those glimmering medallions earlier in her career.
As of now, she’s on the cusp of another piece of hardware; Biles posted a 59.300 individual score across all four apparatuses, more than two points higher than second-place Skye Blakeney. If all things remain copacetic, Biles should cruise to yet another intercontinental title.
There’s still plenty of time to be had, admittedly. But at the moment, it seems everyone is fighting for second place. As much as things change, they remain the same. Biles dominating when the lights are at their brightest? Well, that’s just deja vu.
