The 2024 Paris Olympics are almost upon us, which means assembling athletes for the United States team is beginning.
The U.S. Olympic marathon trials will take place Saturday in Orlando, Fla., featuring some of the country’s best endurance athletes.
To qualify for the Olympic marathon team, the U.S. will take the top three finishers from each qualifying race. The Paris Olympic standard this season is 2:08:10 for men and 2:26:50 for women.
To reach the qualifying race, men had to run at least 2:18 in the marathon or 1:03 in the half marathon leading up to the trials. For women, they needed a 2:37 or 1:12 mark, respectively.
In the last Olympic cycle, Galen Rupp won the trials, running 2:09:20 in Atlanta. Jacob Riley and Abdi Abdirahman qualified alongside Rupp.
Aliphine Tuliamuk took the U.S. women’s crown last time, finishing the marathon in 2:27:23. Molly Seidel and Sally Kipyego qualified with her in 2020.
At the Tokyo Games, Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya won his second career Olympic marathon race, finishing in 2:08:38. Peres Jepchirchir, who also ran for Kenya, won the Tokyo women’s marathon in 2:27:20, taking the gold, while Seidel brought the bronze medal back to the U.S.
