UConn vs. San Diego State live score, updates, highlights from 2023 NCAA championship game

By | April 3, 2023

The field of 68 teams has been whittled down to two, and only one will be crowned a champion on Monday night.

UConn and San Diego State will battle for a national title in Houston to put the cap on what has been one of the most chaotic NCAA Tournaments in history.

Both teams took vastly different paths to this point. UConn has won each of its first five tournament games by double-digits, including blowouts of Arkansas and Gonzaga, to move within a win of the program’s fifth championship since 1999.

The wins haven’t come as easy for the Aztecs, who saw their last two games come down to the final seconds. Nevertheless, San Diego State’s gritty defense and late-game shot-making has lifted the program to the doorstep of the program’s first national championship.

Neither head coach had won an NCAA Tournament game at their current school before this year.

Dan Hurley’s Huskies fell in the first round in 2021 and 2022 before flipping the switch this season. The former Wagner and Rhode Island coach, son of legendary high school coach Bob Hurley, is now one win away from a title.

Brian Dutcher waited more than three decades to get his first shot as a head coach and has thrived at San Diego State. The Aztecs were denied a chance to capitalize on the best season in program history when the tournament was cancelled in 2020, but the same great defense persists three years later.

UConn has looked like the best team in the country since the start of the tournament, but Dutcher’s group is high on confidence and has a defense that will be tough for the Huskies to roll over.

The Huskies opened as a significant favorite over San Diego State, but this is March Madness. Just about anything can happen – yes, even in April.
