UFC 290: Shannon Ross stopped by Jesus Aguilar in 17-second knockout of the year contender

It wasn’t a good start for the strong Aussie contingent at UFC 290 in Las Vegas.

Flyweight Shannon Ross was looking for his first UFC win in his second fight in the organisation but he found himself on the end of a brutal knockout.

Just 17 seconds into the bout, Jesus Aguilar landed a bomb of a right hand which sent the Australian crashing into the mat.

Credit to Mexico’s Aguilar, he acknowledged the fight was over and held back any follow-up shots before the referee could officially wave it off.

The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it stoppage is now the second-fastest finish in UFC flyweight history.

The loss is Ross’ second consecutive defeat in the opening minute of a fight after Kleydson Rodrigues stopped him in 59 seconds at UFC 284 in Perth earlier this year.

After Ross’ defeat, Australian fans hoping Jimmy Crute would get them on the board at UFC 290 were left disappointed following his rematch with Alonzo Menifield.

The two light-heavyweights fought to an all-action draw back in February and Crute had promised to show the full range of his skills this time around but it was the American who had his hand raised.

After a more patient opening round at the T-Mobile Arena, Menifield sunk in a guillotine choke to which Crute tapped in the second round.

An emotional Crute, now winless in has past four fights, was shown taking off his gloves and placing them on the mat after the bout, a suggestion he could be retiring at just 27.
