It certainly appears likely that the end of an era is approadhing.
Serena Williams said in early August the “countdown has begun” for the end of her tennis career. She strongly suggested that the US Open would be her final tournament. Williams has won the most Grand Slam singles titles (23) in the Open Era. Only Margaret Court has more total singles titles, with 24 — 13 of which were won in the Amateur Era.
Williams will not be the only tennis legend descending upon the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, N.Y. Rafael Nadal, who was halfway to the Grand Slam before withdrawing from the Wimbledon semifinal, will enter the US Open hoping to win three Grand Slam singles titles in a calendar year. It would be the second straight year a men’s tennis player has won three after Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open, French Open and US Open in 2021. Djokovic will not play in the 2022 US Open.
Both reigning champions, Daniil Medvedev and Emma Raducanu, will be looking to make it two in a row. Not since Williams won three straight from 2012-14 has a women’s tennis player won consecutive US Open championships. Roger Federer’s run of five straight from 2004-08 is the last time a men’s tennis player has won in consecutive years.

US Open 2022 betting odds
It should be no surprise that Medvedev, the ATP’s No. 1-rated player and reigning champion, is the favorite to win the US Open men’s singles title. He was listed at +192 by Sports Interaction. He was a finalist at the Australian Open to open the year.
Of the men in the field, no one has won the US Open more than Nadal, who enters with the second-best odds to win the event at +246. Nadal has won the US Open four times and has already won the Australian Open and French Open in 2022. He withdrew from the Wimbeldon semifinals because of a torn abdominal muscle, ending his bid for a Grand Slam.
Like Medvedev, WTA No. 1-rated player Iga Swiatek is the heavy favorite to win the US Open, with odds of +293, per Sports Interaction. Swiatek won the French Open earlier this year and had a 37-match winning streak until she was eliminated in the third round at Wimbledon. In 2021, she reached the fourth round at the US Open.
The only past women’s champion with one of the five lowest odds to win the US Open is Naomi Osaka, who won in 2018 and again in 2020. She has the third-best odds in 2022 at +1100, trailing Swiatek and Simona Halep. Osaka reached the third round in 2021. Raducanu ranks eighth at +1700.
Williams is +3100 to win the championship in what could be her final tournament.
