Allyson Felix has the opportunity to be the gold standard once again.
Felix has a chance to further build to her case as one of the greatest United States Olympians ever: the 35-year-old Felix is a nine-time medal winner in the Olympics, with six gold medals and two silvers in her Olympic career, stretching back to 2004.
It wasn’t all gold in 2016 in Rio for Felix; competing in the 400 meter, Felix settled for a silver medal, her third silver overall and the only silver of three medals earned in Brazil. At Olympic trials from June 18-27, Felix will have an opportunity to make her fifth Olympic squad and continue setting the standard for all Olympic athletes.
The women’s track stalwart is just one of many track and field stars trying to break onto Team USA in Eugene, Ore., with men and women taking the field (and track) to make it into the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo.
Sporting News is tracking all the U.S. Olympic qualifiers in track and field throughout the week.

How to qualify for the 2021 Olympics in track and field
Generally, the top three finishers at each event make the Olympic squad, as long as they meet the event’s qualifying standard which is set by an outside organization, World Athletics. World Athletics governs track and field.
In the event that a top-three finisher can’t meet the standard, his or her spot will be given to the highest-placing finisher who did.
For relay events, coaches will select from a pool of six athletes to fill out the team.
