The United States men’s national team will attempt to turn around last weekend’s disastrous 5-1 loss to Colombia. But the team will have to do so against one of the world’s most premier football nations, as the USMNT hosts Brazil in an international friendly Wednesday in Orlando.

In its final tune-up match before the start of the 2024 Copa America, the USMNT will look to prove it is ready to compete for a spot in the semifinals. That is the level most fans are expecting the team to reach on home soil.

Brazil, meanwhile, are also aiming to gear up for the Copa America, which they will enter as second-favorites behind defending champions and chief rivals Argentina. The Selecao needed a 96th minute winner from teenage sensation Endrick to slide past Mexico in their last match, with a number of backups starting that game.

Brazil head coach Dorival Junior is hoping to provide some stability to a national team in turmoil, with his squad sitting a shocking sixth in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying table through the first third of play. Brazil have, however, defeated Spain, England and Mexico in a trio of friendlies since their last qualifier, hinting they are on their way back to their dominant selves.

USA vs. Brazil: First Half

35th min: The game remains frantic but neither side has managed to find any more real quality chances. Brazil have come out of the cooling break in a much lower block than they were in previously, likely in an effort to keep the game from being so absolutely chaotic.

24th min: GOAL! USA! Christian Pulisic wins a foul just outside the penalty area, after being challenged from behind by Joao Gomes. There is indeed VAR tonight, and they have a long look at the replay to see if it indeed was inside the 18-yard-box, but the call stands — it’s very tight, so they stick with the original decision.

He stands over the free-kick, and scores!! WHAT A HIT! IT’S RIPPED INTO THE BOTTOM CORNER! The wall does not do its job as its screened by a great US wall of its own, and Alisson sees it too late to react!

22nd min: Chance, Brazil! Rodrygo is clean through on goal after a wonderfully weighted ball over the top at pace, but Matt Turner does extremely well to come off his line and challenge to prevent any kind of shot. How Turner kept Rodrygo out there, or even from shooting at all, is really impressive!

This match is end-to-end at blistering pace! Both teams are at full throttle!

21st min: Chance, Brazil! Raphinha looks to pick out the top-left corner but fires high! It comes off a good counter-attack from Brazil where they had numbers, and while it seemed to fizzle out as they advanced too slowly, nobody closed the Barcelona man down and he nearly found a brilliant finish.

20th min: Chance, USA! Tim Weah forces another save from Alisson as the Liverpool man has to drop down and to his left to keep the U.S. out of the net! The hosts are behind but moving forward well to pressure the Brazil back line.

17th min: GOAL! BRAZIL! Rodrygo opens the scoring for Brazil as Matt Turner is caught in no-man’s land. It comes off a brilliant diagonal feed from Raphinha that scythes up the USMNT defense, with Chris Richards left in the dust of Rodrygo. Turner doesn’t know whether to come out or stay home, and he has no chance to make the save.

It all came off a giveaway by Turner to start the move, which is becoming a worrying theme for the USMNT.

17th min: Chance, Brazil! MATT TURNER STONEWALLS VINICIUS JR! The Real Madrid superstar got free down the left as Joe Scally was caught high, but the U.S. goalkeeper makes a SENSATIONAL save coming off his line! He waited as long as he could for defenders to track back, but he comes off his line!

16th min: Chance, Brazil! Vinicius Jr. forces a save from Matt Turner, but it’s a disappointing effort. The Real Madrid forward had a ton of space to shoot, but was unable to find space around the U.S. netminder. That opportunity deserved a far better finish.

15th min: The U.S. players look FAR more energized and prepared to compete in this match than they did against Colombia. The hosts are swarming in the defensive half and progressing into the attacking half with vigor. It’s a far better performance so far.

Gio Reyna draws the game’s first yellow card, shown to Joao Gomes who is way late trying to dispossess the American midfielder as he released the ball.

12th min: Tim Weah has a hit from outside the penalty area on his left, and the effort gets good height but is right at Alisson who has little difficulty keeping that one out.

6th min: Chance, USA! Christian Pulisic forces a save from Alisson! He cuts inside onto his right at the top of the penalty area and fires a low effort that forces the Liverpool goalkeeper to the ground, although it was a relatively comfortable save in the end. A pair of early chances for the hosts!

5th min: Chance, USA! YUNUS MUSAH COMES INCHES FROM A STUNNER BUT HE IS DENIED BY THE CROSSBAR! Oh my what a chance, as he takes a rip from the top of the penalty area, but it slams the woodwork and bounces straight down and then out.

4th min: Brazil have looked to pump attacking pressure down their right flank early on, but Antonee Robinson has stood up to the early volume of defending.

Kickoff: They’re under way at Camping World Stadium in Orlando! It’s the final pre-Copa America tuneup for both teams before the matches all count for real!

15 mins to kickoff: Tim Ream said after the defeat to Colombia that he saw how much the game meant to their opponents, and that he wants his USMNT teammates to feel that same desire. How much will they want it tonight, and will that carry them to the biggest result of Gregg Berhalter’s coaching tenure? Or will they suffer defeat against one of the most talented teams in the world and have to head into the Copa America in poor form?

30 mins to kickoff: Gregg Berhalter wasn’t thought to be under pressure heading into the 2024 Copa America. He has a contract through the end of the 2026 World Cup and has overseen a strong period of growth for the U.S. both in continental play and in the talent pool of the squad.

One place they haven’t grown, however, is in results at major competitions. While the USMNT has dominated CONCACAF play since Berhalter was first hired in 2018, they have failed to take strides globally. If the U.S. doesn’t reach the semifinals of the Copa America, there should be a serious inquest to whether Berhalter is the right man for the job heading into the 2026 World Cup.

45 mins to kickoff: The start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is exactly two years from today. What steps will the USMNT take today towards their ultimate goal of a strong performance in that monumental event?

1 hour to kickoff: This Brazil squad is bursting with world-class talent, but there are two issues for the Selecao at the moment. First, and most glaring, is full-back where the only natural fits are Girona youngster Yan Couto, Porto’s Wendell, and Atletico Minero captain Guilherme Arana who hold a combined 13 international caps between the three. Danilo is versatile and can play anywhere along the back line, but figuring out the formula will be key for Dorival Junior.

Interestingly, Brazil have started Lucas Beraldo and Bremer at center-back in these two pre-Copa friendlies, with Gabriel left on the bench both times. Experimentation, or a bold choice?

The other issue for Brazil is up front, where they lack a true No. 9 striker. Tonight, it’s Rodrygo in that role, where you can expect him to drop deeper sometimes as a No. 10 while Vinicius Jr. and Raphinha remain high up the pitch. Look for teenage sensation Endrick to come on at some point in the second half and cause havoc.

1 hour 15 mins to kick: The lineups has been released a bit earlier than usual. For the United States, there are just 2 changes from Colombia. Ricardo Pepi gets a chance at No. 9 for Folarin Balogun, while Yunus Musah comes in for Johnny Cardoso in midfield. Joe Scally remains at right-back after a quality performance against Luis Diaz.

For Brazil, Vini Jr, Rodrygo, Raphinha, Lucas Paqueta, and Bruno Guimaraes all inserted after beginning the Mexico game on the bench. It’s a daunting XI for the USMNT to face off against. Endrick, however, has to wait yet another match for his first international start.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: The United States will wear its blue and red kit tonight, after deploying the whites in the 5-1 defeat to Colombia. Could this Twitter promo be a hint that Brenden Aaronson will get a chance to shine tonight?

1 hour 45 mins to kick: There is likely to be a large contingent of Fulham players on the pitch tonight as American internationals Antonee Robinson and Tim Ream face off against their club teammate Andreas Pereira of Brazil. Pereira started against Mexico and scored just five minutes into the match, a goal which marked a new chapter of Brazilian football, becoming the first player to score for the Selecao born outside of Brazil.

Still, Pereira projects as a backup for Brazil in the Copa America. A good performance today, however, could change that, but only if he’s given a chance. He may not see the field, at least not from the beginning.

2 hours to kickoff: While the vast majority of USMNT players will have some soul searching to do after the 5-1 defeat to Colombia, one player who can be proud of his performance is right-back Joe Scally, who received the opportunity to earn the right-back spot behind the injured Sergino Dest.

Scally has not been strong in his few international appearances, and he had a tough Borussia Monchengladbach season, but he faced a hefty dose of Luis Diaz last time out and stood tall to the pressure, pocketing the Liverpool star for much of the opening hour. We will see if that has earned Scally more of a look, or if Gregg Berhalter will give another player a chance to shine. We’re shuddering at the thought of Shaq Moore facing off against Vinicius Jr. one-on-one…

A large contingent of USMNT regulars who started against Colombia will see the field again here as head coach Gregg Berhalter looks to get his players in sync. Berhalter indicated before the Colombia match that there would likely be very few changes between that game’s lineup and this one, and that’s the case, with just two alterations.

Joe Scally did well against Colombia in his chance to earn the right-back spot behind the injured Sergino Dest, and Berhalter sticks with him rather than give Shaq Moore or Tim Weah a chance to impress. There’s no room for Haji Wright to get a chance from the off, as it would require either moving or sitting Christian Pulisic since Wright is a natural left winger. Ricardo Pepi gets a chance up front, with Folarin Balogun dropping out.

Midfield star Tyler Adams is only fit for a substitute role, Berhalter confirmed in his pre-match press conference, while Josh Sargent will not participate due to a foot injury but is “progressing well.”
