For the fourth time in five Olympics, USA and Brazil will faceoff in Olympic women’s volleyball. This will be the first semifinals match, though, as the classic rivals only went head-to-head in the gold medal match previously.
The last time these two met? The 2021 finals. The USA swept Brazil to win its first ever gold medal in the Olympics. They faced off in the 2008 and 2012 finals, too, but Brazil won the title both times with four-set wins.
While the U.S. had a rough start in Paris, going to five sets with China and Serbia, the team found its rhythm against Poland in the quarterfinals. Annie Drews’ heavy arm led the way with 13 points (12 kills and one block) and seven digs to complete the sweep. Avery Skinner looked like anything but an Olympic newcomer, adding 12 kills and 10 digs to lead all outside hitters.
A second straight Olympic finals match won’t come easy as Brazil’s ranked No. 2 in the world for a reason. They swept every opponent in group play, which included Kenya, Japan and Poland. The U.S. will rely on its tough group matches for experience when they play in the biggest rivalry match in volleyball.
