By | September 4, 2022

The final day of the 2022 IIHF Women’s World Championship is here and the two best teams at the tournament are the last two standing: The United States and Canada are set to face off in the gold-medal game.

It’s not just a rematch of the 2021 gold-medal game. In fact, out of the 21 total Women’s World Championship, the two rival countries have met in 20 of them. Canada and the United States are also the only owners of gold medals from the tournament.

Both teams have dominated the tournament. The USA is outscoring its opponents 52-5, most recently knocking off Czechia in the semifinals by a score of 10-1. Taylor Heise, who is coming off scoring two goals and three assists in the semis win, leads the tournament with 11 points. Behind her are her teammates Amanda Kessel with 10 and Hannha Blinka with seven.

Canada cruised by Switzerland 8-1 to advance to the gold-medal game. The team has outscored its opposition 30-8 and its only loss came in the final game of the preliminary round when the USA defeated Canada 5-2.

Canada came out on top in the 2021 championship game, a 3-2 overtime over the USA thanks to a goal by Poulin. Will Canada avenge its prelims loss and get another gold, or will the United States grab its first gold since 2019?

The Sporting News will provide updates and highlights for the Canada-USA game at the 2022 Women’s World Championship in Denmark.

First period

1:51 p.m. β€” Abby Roque gets called for an illegal hit on Sarah Nurse so Canada heads to the power play.

1:49 p.m. β€” Canada has to be more responsible with the puck. The team has had a couple of bad turnovers in its own zone, resulting in either scoring chances or sustained pressure by the United States. Hilary Knight’s line controlled the play for at least a minute in Canada’s zone. Still scoreless.

1:46 p.m. β€” A back-and-forth game thus far. Not a ton of great chances on either side. The best one came from the United States off a Canada turnover in its own zone. Kendall Coyne Schofield grabbed a loose puck and was all alone in the slot, but she is denied by Ann-Renee Desbiens.
