USA vs. Canada live score: USMNT and CanMNT result, updates, stats from CONCACAF Nations League third place

By | March 23, 2025

Anytime the USMNT faces off against Canada nowadays, there’s a heated undertone to the clash, but this game will have an air of disappointment as the two teams meet in the third place match of the 2024/25 CONCACAF Nations League.

Both sides were left bitterly disappointed not to reach the final, especially the United States who were stunned by Panama 1-0 in the semifinals on a stoppage-time winner.

The defeat was an embarrassment for Mauricio Pochettino who suffered his first truly negative result as USMNT head coach. The former PSG and Chelsea manager was quite simply out-coached by Thomas Christensen, making a host of errors that drew criticism from fans and media and shattered the previously impervious aura around his hire.

It left the United States, who had won all previous iterations of the Nations League, not in the final for the first time in the competition’s four tournaments.

Canada, meanwhile, were up to the task against Mexico but failed to take advantage of their spells of superiority before being punished for defensive errors.

2 hours to kickoff: Regardless of the disappointment for the competitive stage of this match, neither team is likely to take this game off. Canada feel as though they are lacking “respect” from the game, especially in the aftermath of the semifinal defeat where they were denied a penalty when Derek Cornelius appeared to be fouled in the box.

They will be up for the match. Will the US? It’s a fair question after the lackluster performance in their semifinal.

USA vs. Canada lineups, team news

First-choice options Ricardo Pepi and Folarin Balogun suffered long-term injuries to leave them out of action, with Pepi done for the season after knee surgery and Balogun still missing with his shoulder injury. Haji Wright was also not called in having just returned to the field from an ankle injury.

That leaves Josh Sargent as the first-choice striker, finally healthy and hoping to bring his good Norwich City form back for international duty. Patrick Agyemang could also factor in after a strong showing in January camp.

Sergino Dest only just returned to club action from his ACL tear and is not yet fit for international duty, while Malik Tillman is absent due to an ankle issue. Antonee Robinson has withdrawn from the squad due to injury, which represents a major blow late in the leadup to this game. Johnny Cardoso and Auston Trusty were also scratched from the squad after being called in.

USA projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Turner (GK) — Weah, Carter-Vickers, Richards, Scally — McKennie, Adams, Tessman — Musah, Sargent, Pulisic.

Forward Cyle Larin will look to make history by becoming Canada’s joint-top goalscorer with striker partner Jonathan David.
