Could a World Cup of upsets begin its Round of 16 with another one when the upstart USA national team takes on the Netherlands with a spot in the quarter-finals at stake? It’s been 20 years since the USA reached a men’s quarter-final, while the Dutch reached the stage and pushed even further in their last appearance in 2014.
The USA were the runner-up in Group B behind England, enjoying sparkling stretches of play in all three matches that have attracted international praise, including from Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal, who has called the Americans one of the best teams in Qatar.
Meanwhile, the Dutch side has gone 18 matches unbeaten under van Gaal, who will depart the Netherlands at the end of their World Cup run.
The European side is ranked No. 8 in the world, but the United States will come in believing they can pull out a result. Can the U.S. find their second-ever quarterfinal berth? Or will the Dutch assert their dominance and back up their glittering prestige?

USA vs. Netherlands: First half
33rd min: The U.S. look extremely sloppy in midfield, where they’ve been the best this tournament so far. Adams is maintaining his important level, but Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah have been very loose in possession.
Through the first 30 minutes, Weston McKennie + Yunus Musah for #USA vs. #NED
28 touches
12 lost possession
0/4 ground duels
0/1 aerial
13/20 passing (65%)— Kyle Bonn (@the_bonnfire) December 3, 2022
29th min: A nervy moment in the U.S. penalty area as Memphis appears to have a chance to rip a shot, but Walker Zimmerman does exceptionally well to shield him off, conceding a corner. The first one is cleared, out for another, which is aimed for Virgil van Dijk, but Zimmerman clears.
27th min: The U.S. continue to search for more chances but have a difficult time finding a way through this stout Dutch defense. A YIKES moment from Matt Turner as a heavy touch nearly falls to a lurking Dutch attacker, but he clears and gets away with it.
21st min: Memphis has a hit on the U.S. goal from an insanely tight angle and deep distance, and it goes well wide across the face of goal. Cody Gakpo’s unhappy with that audacious effort.
18th min: The U.S. has maintained its high energy since the goal, with the Netherlands absorbing some pressure in the U.S. attacking third. Still no more chances on goal, however.
Depay’s goal, meanwhile, moves him clear into second all-time for the Dutch national team, as his 43rd international strike, passing Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

10th min: GOAL! NETHERLANDS! The Dutch side goes in front! Memphis Depay finishes off an incisive counter that leaves the U.S. defense completely scattered. It comes in from the right flank to Depay atop the penalty spot all alone, and he produces a cool finish. It’s far, far too easy for the Netherlands against a U.S. side that got caught way too high up the field.
Pulisic misses his chance on one end, and the Dutch capitalize on theirs not seven minutes later. That’s how this game goes sometimes, have to be deadly.

8th min: The United States have a ton of pressure in the frontcourt but there’s no goal just yet. Jedi wins a corner which Pulisic delivers well to the far post, but the target Tim Ream is walled off by good Dutch defending. Moments later, Pulisic sends in a cross from the left but it evades the trailing attackers.
3rd min: Chance, USA! SAVE, NOPPERT! Oh no, Christian Pulisic has to score that! He’s clean through on goal, but is stonewalled by the Dutch goalkeeper! The Chelsea man is onside on a ball from Adams that catches the Dutch back line out, but Pulisic’s effort is stopped by Noppert’s leg. That has to go, a HUGE opportunity missed!

2nd min: As expected, high early pressure from the United States has them with significant possession in the attacking half through the first few minutes. It’s no surprise, as the Dutch have been vulnerable when pressed this World Cup.

Kickoff: HERE WE GO, KICKOFF AT KHALIFA INTERNATIONAL STADIUM! Can the U.S. secure their second-ever quarterfinal berth at a FIFA World Cup? Or will the No. 8-ranked Dutch move to 19 matches unbeaten and advance to the next round?
The U.S. is the only team yet to concede a non-penalty goal at this World Cup, while Cody Gakpo has scored in every game so far. One of them has to give!

USA vs. Netherlands: Pre-match coverage
15 mins to kickoff: It’s been known since April that Dutch head coach Louis van Gaal will depart the national team as soon as their World Cup journey is over. Ronald Koeman has already been named as his successor. Could this be his last game in charge? They’re 18 matches unbeaten under the head man, and surely the Dutch won’t want this to be the first, and the last.

25 mins to kickoff: With Christian Pulisic cleared to play and starting for the USMNT, he spoke about what this game means to the country and the team.
“We have a fighting American spirit. We are not intimidated by anyone we go up against.”

47 mins to kickoff: Sergino Dest will be in focus today as he plays against his home nation. He was born and raised in Holland as an Ajax youth product, eligible for U.S. citizenship through his father. As the players came out for warmups on the pitch, he took a long, introspective moment to himself at the center of the pitch. It’s a big moment for the young full-back who looks to justify his choice and advance to the Round of 16 over a nation he surely holds close to his heart.
UPDATE: Ferreira is actually 2nd to last out.

1 hr from kickoff: There were reports that the Dutch national team is dealing with a flu that’s gone around the squad. On ESPN’s prematch coverage, Dutch presenter Pascal Kamperman stated that it’s not really a flu, but more of a cold brought on by the air conditioning at the facilities in Qatar. They’re downplaying the effect it will have on the players on the field.
1 hr 15 mins from kickoff: The lineups are out, and there are two changes from the USA team that gutted out a 1-0 victory over Iran. Walker Zimmerman comes back into the lineup at center-back, replacing Cameron Carter-Vickers, while Jesus Ferreira gets his first start at striker, with Josh Sargent coming out. Sargent has been deemed unavailable for this match due to his ankle injury.
For the Netherlands, head coach Louis van Gaal names an unchanged side from the team that beat Qatar, meaning Memphis Depay starts up front alongside Cody Gakpo.
Check out our full overview of the lineups & team news below.
1 hr 28 mins from kickoff: Only one player won more tackles across the whole of the World Cup group stage than U.S. captain Tyler Adams, and everything starts with him in midfield. If the U.S. are to win against the Netherlands, it will start with their midfield overwhelming Frenkie de Jong and the rest of the Dutch central players.
1 hr 47 mins from kickoff: The biggest question today, with about 30-45 minutes to go before team news is released, is whether Christian Pulisic will start for the United States. He has been cleared to play by the United States, but that doesn’t mean he’s 100 percent fit. ESPN reporter Jeff Carlisle said he looked “iffy” in training yesterday, but that could just be him trying to take it easy before the match. His status and fitness will be a huge part of the game.
Thought Pulisic looked kind of iffy, especially while cutting. But it was also a warmup so take that for what it’s worth. #usmnt

2 hrs from kickoff: The USA are significant underdogs today but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them at least push the Netherlands as hard as they did Ghana and Belgium in their last two appearances at the finals.
Both of those games culminated in 2-1 defeats after extra time. How they’d love to exorcise those narrow exits if this encounter goes beyond 90 minutes.
2 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: The Netherlands have not lost in normal time in any of the 10 games they have played under Van Gaal at the finals – although they did fail to qualify for the 2002 tournament as part of his brief first tenure as head coach.
They also achieved what no team at this edition of the finals has done by winning all three of their group games in 2014.
3 hrs from kickoff Good omen? USA captain Tyler Adams’ Leeds United pulled off a huge shock when they beat Netherlands stalwart Virgil van Dijk’s Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League at the end of October.
3 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: The Netherlands have conceded once in their last five games – Ecuador’s equaliser during the 1-1 draw in the group stage. They have scored eight times during those matches.

The only questions in the U.S. lineup were at center-back and center forward. At the back, Berhalter restores Walker Zimmerman to the startling eleven as Cameron Carter-Vickers, who came in for the Iran match, drops back out.
Up front, Jesus Ferreira earns his first start of the World Cup as he replaces Josh Sargent at the central striker position. Sargent has been deemed unavailable for this match due to his ankle injury suffered against Iran.
Tim Weah and Christian Pulisic remain untouchable in the lineup, as the latter has recovered from his pelvic contusion suffered in the follow-through of his game-winner against Iran, which means Giovanni Reyna continues to bide his time on the bench. Pulisic was cleared to play, but it’s still unclear what level of fitness he possesses or whether he can last the full 90 minutes.
USA (4-3-3, right to left): 1. Turner (GK) — 2. Dest, 3. Zimmerman, 13. Ream, 5. Robinson — 8. McKennie, 4. Adams, 6. Musah — 21. Weah, 9. Ferreira, 10. Pulisic.

How many members of the Netherlands squad were impacted by the bout of flu that hit the team in the lead-up? We’ll soon find out based on the lineup Louis Van Gaal rolls out. Dutch media indicates that all 26 players were on the training field on the day before the match.
Will Memphis Depay get his wish and partner with Steven Bergwijn up top? According to major outlets in the Netherlands, the Barcelona forward went public with his preference to work alongside Bergwijn, which is sure to bring greater scrutiny to Van Gaal’s lineup selections.
Netherlands (3-4-1-2, right to left): 23. Noppert (GK) — 2. Timber, 4. Van Dijk, 5. Ake — 22. Dumfries, 15. De Roon, 21. De Jong, 17. Blind — 8. Gakpo — 7. Bergwijn, 10. Depay
