A great rivalry can make a difference in boxing. One of the most celebrated rivalries in the sport is Mexico vs. Puerto Rico. Some of the top boxers have faced one another for titles. Pride is always on the line.
Bouts created from the rivalry include Salvador Sanchez vs. Wilfredo Gomez, Felix Trinidad vs. Fernando Vargas, Wilfredo Gomez vs. Lupe Pintor, and Canelo Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto. Amanda Serrano (Puerto Rico) and Erika Cruz (Mexico) will look to add to the rivalry when they face off on February 4.
Serrano and Cruz will fight inside Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater for the status of undisputed featherweight champion.
If Serrano beats Cruz, she would be the first Puerto Rican fighter, male or female, to become undisputed. That would add to the rivalry. Even with 30 wins via knockout, Serrano faces a tough challenge in Cruz. While she only has three wins via knockout, Cruz’s boxing skills have been praised by many.

“It would be an honor for me and my island. I have dedicated myself to fighting for women and the Latino community, but especially for Puerto Rico… Erika’s style is forward. I like it, I love that,” Serrano told ESPN Digital via ESPN Deportes. “I have the same style, but my power is higher. She doesn’t know what my punches will feel like. But I love the give and take. The best thing is to be able to beat a Mexican, due to the PR-Mexico rivalry. I can’t ask for more.”
Cruz has held gold since 2021, while Serrano a seven-division champion, first picked up featherweight gold in 2019. Primarily fighting in Mexico, this will be Cruz’s second-ever fight in New York. While there have been undisputed champions from Mexico, she is looking to be the first to do it for women.
“At this very important moment, I’m going to fight a legend like Amanda Serrano. It’s something very exciting to me because I’m about to become the first Mexican unified champion,” Cruz told Matchroom Boxing. “I know that I’m up against a tough opponent. I can’t say that it’s going to be easy. But I would like to win. I want to become undisputed champion in all divisions. I know how strong Amanda is, but so am I.
