The 71st rendition of the storied men’s Beanpot tournament features a seismic showdown, as No. 1 Boston College duels No. 3 Boston University Monday night at TD Garden.
The Eagles and Terriers are set to meet for the third time in the last nine days. The two sides battled on Jan. 26 and Jan. 27, with Boston College prevailing in both contests.
The Eagles took the opening game in Chestnut Hill, 4-1, and then secured a 4-3 road victory the ensuing night to notch the sweep of their rival.
BC enters the showdown on a five-game winning streak. In Friday’s 6-1 beatdown of UMass Lowell, sophomore standout Cutter Gauthier scored his Hockey East-leading 20th and 21st goals of the season; Gauthier’s point streak now stands at 14 games, the longest such streak in the conference this season.
BU snapped a three-match losing streak with a 6-3 win over then-No. 18 New Hampshire on Friday night. Freshman sensation Macklin Celebrini notched his team-leading 19th goal, the most of any NCAA rookie.
The winner will advance to the men’s Beanpot final on Feb. 12 to take on the winner of the other semifinal between Harvard vs. Northeastern. The losers of those two matchups will meet on Feb. 12, as well.
BU last won the Beanpot in 2022. BC has not won the tournament since 2016.
