In early 2020, Matt Rhule was in the early days of his tenure coaching the Carolina Panthers and Deion Sanders was his sons’ offensive coordinator at Trinity Christian School in Texas. On Saturday, their paths collide in a clash of former college football powerhouses.
A Colorado-Nebraska matchup might not be what it was in the 1990s, but to say anticipation is high for Saturday’s game would be an understatement.
The Buffaloes stunned No. 17 TCU in Sanders’ FBS coaching debut in Week 1, backed by a dramatic two-way performance by Travis Hunter and a school-record 510 passing yards from Shedeur Sanders. It’s still unclear how high expectations should be for this new-look Colorado team, but it’s clear these Buffaloes won’t be pushed around so easily.
Rhule is trying to lead a similar turnaround at Nebraska, but it’s going to take time. The Cornhuskers impressed defensively in a Week 1 matchup at Minnesota, only to falter in the fourth quarter and give up 10 unanswered points.
Nebraska’s defense could be a challenge for Colorado, but unless Cornhuskers QB Jeff Sims and the rest of the passing game can take a big step forward, keeping up with the Buffaloes on the road will be difficult.
