The USWNT’s road to another World Cup title hasn’t been as smooth as many anticipated, but Team USA’s hopes of winning a record third straight title remain strong — the team just has less room for error and, potentially, a harder road to the finals after a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands. The next stage of the tournament hinges on the team’s final group stage match vs. Portugal.
Alex Morgan and Co. likely need to lay on the goals vs. Portugal to ensure they earn the first overall spot in Group E on point differential. The USWNT currently is tied 4-4 in the group standings, but still have a three-goal advantage over the Dutch team. Depending on whether the USWNT wins — and by how much — the U.S. could finish first or second in the standings.
Should Team USA come out on top of Group E, its next match will kick off at a reasonable 10 p.m. ET for American viewers. Otherwise, fans stateside will have to wake up early for the team’s Round of 16 game.

Here’s everything you need to know about the USWNT’s next World Cup match and the scenarios that could change its remaining schedule.
When does the USWNT play next?
The USWNT’s next match depends on two factors: Whether it advances at all from Group E, and, if it does, whether it finishes first or second. If the team falls to Portugal in the third group stage match, there is a chance Team USA could fail to advance altogether.
Should the U.S. advance (presumably alongside the Netherlands) its schedule will depend on whether it finishes first or second in the group standings. The U.S. would play a team from Group G in the Round of 16. Sweden leads the group entering the final round of matches and already has secured a spot in the knockout stages, with Italy currently the best bet as the second team to move on.
Below is a rundown of the USWNT’s remaining schedule, depending on where they finish:
