When is the FA Cup final 2023? Dates and fixture schedule for every round

By | February 7, 2023

The FA Cup is in the final stages of the Fourth Round as the trophy dreams will end for another batch of teams.

FA Cup holders Liverpool were dumped out to Brighton in the biggest shock of the round.

Premier League champions Manchester City reached the Round of 16 after a narrow victory over Arsenal, while rivals Manchester United overcame Reading who play in the second-tier Championship.

The draw for the Round of 16 (Fifth Round) took place before the final matchup of the Fourth Round and before any required replays.

Those games included Championship high-fliers Sheffield United needing a pair of injury-time goals to see off Wrexham of the National League, ending Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s cup adventure.

When are the 2022/23 FA Cup round dates?

The FA Cup officially kicked off on the same weekend that the Premier League began, pitting non-league teams against each other in the earliest preliminary round at the start of August.

Minnows have to play as many as six qualifying rounds before the first round proper at the start of November, when teams from the bottom two divisions in England — League One and League Two — join the party.

There are always memorable upsets at that stage of the competition, although the greatest giant-killings arrive in January with the 20 Premier League teams and 24 clubs from the second tier Championship beginning their campaigns.

The Premier League schedule takes a back seat during two weekends in January for the FA Cup Third Round and Fourth Round.

When is the FA Cup final?

That final date, June 3, traditionally represents a showpiece end to the regular domestic season in England.

The showdown at the national stadium of Wembley remains an iconic day on the English sporting calendar.

Wembley is arguably the most prestigious place most supporters can hope to see their teams play at, especially for fans unfamiliar with their clubs reaching finals.

The staging of the FA Cup at 3 p.m. local time on a Saturday in May was long held as sacrosanct. In recent times, though, kick-off has tended to take place later in the day. In 2022/23, the final began at the curious time of 4:45 p.m. because of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Are Premier League teams playing on the same day as the FA Cup final?

There was a time when the idea of Premier League games taking place within hours of the final would have seemed ridiculous, but those days now seem as distant a memory.

Manchester United won the Premier League on the same day as the 2011 final, and one league game took place on the final date in the two years that followed.

The FA said it had responded to popular demand from fans and media when beginning in 2014 it decided to schedule the final following the closing round of league games once again.

In 2023, the final will take place a week after the Premier League season ends on May 28.

Has the 2022 FIFA World Cup affected the FA Cup final?

The 2022/23 season in Europe has been disrupted in an unprecedented fashion due to the World Cup in Qatar, which ran from mid-November to December 18.

The Premier League season kicked off on its earliest-ever date in order to accommodate the break in games for the World Cup, and for the same reason the FA Cup final will take place in June for the first time.

The changes enforced by the first ever World Cup to be held in the November/December window have angered many fans — especially purists — and have been broadly unpopular among managers.

Should English teams reach the UEFA Champions League final on June 10, their players who also took part in the World Cup will have played for more than 10 months without any substantial break.
