When is USA vs Mexico soccer friendly? Date, time, tickets, live stream, TV for Continental Clasico 2023

By | April 12, 2023

The USA men’s national team will meet Mexico for the first time in 2023 as they face off in a friendly to be played in Glendale, Arizona in mid-April.

In the first of an annual event dubbed the “Continental Clasico,” the match will see two of the three 2026 World Cup hosts match up in an effort to build towards the big FIFA men’s tournament taking place in just over three years’ time.

While the match falls outside a FIFA international window, it is still expected to be closely followed and fiercely contested. These two teams have developed a venomous rivalry of late, and a hotly contested one as well, with four wins apiece plus two draws over their last 10 meetings.

The U.S. have the more positive recent history, however, as they secured three wins over Mexico in a single calendar year in 2021, and then went to the Estadio Azteca and secured a draw in World Cup qualifying in 2022.

The USA and Mexico will resume their fierce border rivalry in a friendly on Wednesday, April 19 in a match from just outside Phoenix, Arizona.

However, it’s notable that this game will fall outside a designated FIFA international window, meaning clubs are not required to release players for international duty. As a result, it’s unlikely that either roster will feature its most notable stars, instead constructed of largely domestic-based players.

Tickets for the match went on sale March 23, and are available to the public.

What is the Continental Clasico?

In early March of 2023, U.S. Soccer announced a new annual event known as the Continental Clasico, in which the USMNT will play a team to be determined from North, Central, or South America.

While the first opponent is Mexico in 2023, it seems that the U.S. will look to secure matches against other world powers from South America or other nearby regions.

With the United States automatically qualified for the 2026 World Cup as joint hosts, they are not participating in CONCACAF qualification. Therefore, this event is likely an attempt to secure a match against top-level competition during a four-year World Cup cycle that will lack competitive action due to the absence of World Cup qualification.

USA vs Mexico history head to head

The match will be the first of two scheduled meetings between the USA and Mexico men’s soccer teams, and it will be their sixth meeting of the last three years.

Mexico have not beaten the USA since a 3-0 friendly win in July of 2019, and they haven’t won a competitive match since the 2019 Gold Cup final.

Because there must be a winner in this summer’s Nations League match, it’s possible that a penalty shootout could be required, should the match remain level after extra time. There has not been a penalty shootout between the USA and Mexico since the 1995 Copa America quarterfinals when the U.S. won the shootout 4-1 after a 0-0 draw. In that shootout, Carlos Hermosillo and Alberto Coyote both saw their spot-kicks saved by Brad Friedel.

Overall, across 65 all-time meetings throughout their rivalry, the USA have won 21 times, while Mexico have won 33 matches, with 11 draws. Below is a list of the last 10 matches between the two teams (plus the two games that have yet to be played this year), in which each side has won four times plus two draws.
