The Winter Classic returns to Fenway Park for the first time in 13 years on Monday, as the 111-year-old home of the Boston Red Sox gets set to host the Bruins and Penguins in arguably the premier event of the NHL’s regular season.
As if the Winter Classic needed any more storylines, the Bruins enter 2023 with the best record in the NHL in year one under coach Jim Montgomery. Boston is 28-4-4 with only three home losses all season.
The Penguins, on the other hand, are in a battle to secure a playoff spot. With 44 points and a 19-11-8 record, Pittsburgh enters the new year clinging to a wild card spot.
Mike Sullivan’s team has lost four consecutive games coming into the Winter Classic, so while the season isn’t even halfway over, there might be a sense of urgency from the Penguins when they take the ice at Fenway Park.
