World Series 2023 live score: Rangers vs. Diamondbacks updates, highlights, results from Game 5

By | November 1, 2023

The Rangers are on the brink of baseball immortality.

Big-money signings Corey Seager and Marcus Semien proved they are worth their weight in gold during Game 4 of the World Series, sending moonshots into the Arizona night sky to propel Texas to a victory. The win brought Texas on the cusp of MLB’s promised land — frolicking underneath the steady pour of confetti, Commissioner’s Trophy firmly in grasp.

The middle-infield pairing has had about as varied an experience as one can imagine during the postseason. Seager has been the star, spraying rockets all across the fertile meadow. He has four hits in the World Series, three of them homers.

Semien’s road to November has been littered with potholes. The slick-handed second baseman is hitting just .211 in the playoffs, a far cry from the more efficient .276/.348/.478 slash line he sported during the regular season.

Despite their contrasting displays over the course of October, Seager and Semien earned their paychecks on Tuesday. If they can do so again, glory awaits them. And that will represent $500 million well spent to the Rangers’ front office brass.

World Series results, highlights from Rangers vs. Diamondbacks Game 5

(All times Eastern)

8:51 p.m.: Brilliant small ball by Moreno. The youngster lays down his first sacrifice bunt of the year, dropping it perfectly in between first base and home plate to move Carroll and Marte 90 feet. Walker has a chance to put the D-Backs in the driver’s seat.

8:49 p.m.: Marte takes first via walk. Mike Maddux headed to the mound as the Rangers look to stop this thing from unraveling. Two on the pond, none out for Moreno.

8:47 p.m.: Corbin Carroll deposits Eovaldi’s opening pitch of the inning beyond Semien in second. Expect some mayhem on the basepaths now.

8:44 p.m.: First pitch swinging for Jankowski proves unfulfilling; the Rangers right fielder grounds out to end the frame. Nine up, nine down for Gallen.

8:43 p.m.: Alek Thomas slides underneath Leody Taveras’ lofted effort for Out No. 2 of the  inning.

8:41 p.m.: One pitch, one out: Jonah Heim grounds out to second base. Gallen has retired seven straight to start tonight’s game. Not too shabby.

Third inning

8:38 p.m.: Geraldo Perdomo lifts a lazy fly ball into right field, straight into the wickets of Travis Jankowski. Inning over. Arizona has yet to drive in one of its five runners in scoring position today.

8:35 p.m.: Evan Longoria got great wood on a Eovaldi off-speed pitch, ripping it into left field. Unfortunately for him, Evan Carter got a great beat on the ball, sliding on his knees to steal a hit from the legendary third baseman. Two away for Eovaldi and the Rangers.

8:33 p.m.: Seager wades into Semien territory to throw out Alek Thomas’s grounder. Gurriel allowed to advance to second.

8:31 p.m.: Lourdes Gurriel opens the second with a single, delicately lifting a grounder into open air. Leadoff runner on for the second straight inning for Arizona.

8:27 p.m.: Gallen got things rolling in the second, getting out of the inning in seven pitches. Struck out Mitch Garver, then prompted Josh Jung and Nathaniel Lowe to ground out to end the frame.

Second inning

8:24 p.m.: Eovaldi wins the battle of wits, coaxing a groundball out into Seager. The Rangers tight-roped out of the first inning without conceding a run.

8:21 p.m.: Eovaldi misses the target once more, sending Walker to first via walk. Phenomenal take by Walker on 2-2 to avoid swinging over the top of Sovaldi’s splitter. Interesting matchup on the horizon between Eovaldi and Tommy Pham, who smoked one of Eovaldi’s fastballs for a dinger in Game 1.

8:19 p.m.: Gabriel Moreno sends a weak dribbler to Seager. Not enough on it to trouble the Rangers shortstop. More importantly, Carroll was unable to depart after being looked off the bag. Christian Walker looking to keep the rally going with two outs.

8:15 p.m.: Corbin Carroll makes things happen! The D-Backs rookie recorded a walk after seeing four straight pitches stray wide of the target. Then, he pounces, bursting out of his lead to take second base with relative ease! He moves 90 feet after Ketel Marte’s weakly grounds out to second base, giving Arizona a chance to open the scoring.

8:11 p.m.: Gallen gets out of the unblemished, forcing Semien and Seager out via flyout and ground out before taking Evan Carter down via strikes. Just what the All-Star Game starter needed.

8:00 p.m.: And we’re off! Gallen takes the mound as the Snakes look to keep their World Series hopes alive!

First inning

7:15 p.m.: Good pitching matchup on display today between the Rangers’ Nathan Eovaldi and the Diamondbacks’ Zac Gallen. Eovaldi was excellent in the regular season but struggled in his 2023 World Series debut, giving up five runs in 4.2 innings of work. Gallen has experienced similar difficulties, faltering vs. the Phillies before having a less than stellar Game 1 showing.

6:50 p.m.: Former Diamondbacks All-Star Orlando Hudson had some inspirational words to share with his former franchise prior to tonight’s game:

6:10 p.m.: The Diamondbacks are hoping to join this magnificent seven as teams who have overcame a 3-1 deficit to capture the Commissioner’s Trophy. They have quite the task on their hands, however.

4:20 p.m.: Here’s how Torey Lovullo set things up in a must-win game, as Evan Longoria returns to the lineup after sitting in Game 4:

4:05 p.m.: The Rangers’ lineup is out. No surprise to see Travis Jankowski in it after he stepped in for the injured Adolis Garcia last night and went 2 for 4, driving in two runs.
