Wrexham squad for The Soccer Tournament: Red Dragons’ player list for USA competition

By | June 1, 2023

Wrexham will compete in the inaugural The Soccer Tournament in June as part of a busy summer schedule for those associated with the National League champions.

The Welsh side clinched promotion back into the English Football League at the back end of the 2022/23 campaign, with the squad enjoying some well-deserved partying in Las Vegas.

Club owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney fulfilled their promise of a squad mega-party if promotion was achieved at the Racecourse Ground. The team is now getting ready for some preseason fixtures in the United States against the likes of Manchester United.

However, it will be a team of club legends and guest players who take to the field in the a new competition this week.

Wrexham squad for The Soccer Tournament

Wrexham have named a list comprising club legends and some more surprising figures as part of their travelling squad for a team officially called the Wrexham Red Dragons for this tournament.

Phil Parkinson’s first team head to USA for a separate summer tour later in June, but The Soccer Tournament will feature a list of former heroes for Red Dragons fans.

Former strike duo Lee Trundle and Andy Morrell will be on the plane, for a team managed by David Jones, in a reunion for the pair who fired Wrexham to League Two promotion in 2003.

Mark Carrington, who played more than 200 times for the club between 2013 and 2021, is a former Player of the Year at Wrexham. He is joined by Paul Rutherford, another who passed 200 appearances for the club and who became a more familiar name to fans in the USA after being sent off in his final match for Wrexham — an incident seen in the early episodes of Welcome to Wrexham.

Two other players to play under Phil Parkinson make the trip: Dan Jarvis, a midfielder who signed from Stoke shortly before the pandemic in 2020, and goalkeeper Mark Howard. Scott Butler, fresh from signing a new one-year contract with the club, will also play.

Finally, there are two ‘guest’ players in the Wrexham squad: George Boyd, a former Scotland international who played in the Premier League for Hull City and Burnley, and Liam Grimshaw, a Manchester United academy graduate who spent last season at Greenock Morton.

Where is The Soccer Tournament being played?

TST will be held in Cary, North Carolina at the WakeMed Soccer Park. The venue is famous in US college soccer circles, with recent matches including the 2022 NCAA men’s soccer College Cup, and the 2020, 2019, and 2014 College Cups.
