Yankees land two-time All-Star closer from Brewers in blockbuster deal

By | December 13, 2024

The Milwaukee Brewers ran away with the National League Central this season by winning 93 games, but they fell short in the Wild Card Series against the New York Mets.

Milwaukee has already lost Willy Adames in free agency, and they were expected to shop All-Star closer Devin Williams.

On Friday, Milwaukee found a taker for Williams, sending him to the New York Yankees. In exchange, New York is sending second baseman Caleb Durbin and left-hander Nestor Cortes to Milwaukee.

Jeff Passan of ESPN was first to the news.

Williams missed a good chunk of the season while recovering from a back injury. However, once he returned, he put up very strong numbers with the Brewers.

The 30-year-old appeared in 22 games and saved 14 of them while posting a 1.25 ERA after coming off the injured list.

The Yankees now have an All-Star closer in their mix. As for the Brewers, they receive a promising young prospect in Durbin and a solid middle-of-the-rotation piece in Cortes. They will still hope to remain on top in the NL Central.

It will be interesting if the Brewers have any other moves planned following this trade. They are going to need some help in their bullpen and might be wise to search the free agent market and make a play for one of the top closers available.

They could try for Jeff Hoffman, Carlos Estevez, Kyle Finnegan or potentially even Kirby Yates. They will need a trusted arm at the back end if they want to remain at the top of the NL Central in 2025.
