Yankees-Marlins trade idea sends ‘breakout’ 3rd baseman to New York

By | May 31, 2025

The New York Yankees have an obvious need–a right-handed-hitting infielder.

It appears that New York’s search has broadened to include second baseman, as Jazz Chisholm Jr. seems destined to play third base once his stint on the injured list is up. But that could simply be due to the trade market being weak on third basemen at present.

One baseball writer believes a trade possibility could open up that lands the Yankees a young, promising third baseman and shifts Chisholm back to his more natural position of second.

On Friday, Jacob Mountz of Yardbarker suggested Miami Marlins third baseman Connor Norby, who debuted in the majors in 2024 and has heated up of late in year two, as a potential Yankees trade target.

“The Marlins, who once again sit at the bottom of the NL East, will undoubtedly be sellers at the trade deadline,” Mountz wrote.

“Norby, who combines plus power and exceptional contact-hitting talent with ample speed, will likely receive plenty of attention if he continues on his current trajectory. As things stand, Norby would represent a vast improvement over the Yankees’ existing options.”

Norby, 24, has a .275/.317/.427 slash line in 36 games this season, and has batted .319 over his last 20 games. Consistent major league playing time seems to be bringing out the best in him after a struggle for recognition with the Baltimore Orioles and Marlins last year.

It doesn’t fully make sense for the Marlins to trade Norby, because he’s under team control for five more years. Still, Miami has shown themselves to be willing to move on from just about anyone if the prospect price is right.

Norby isn’t that far removed from prospect status himself, which frankly means both sides could come out of the deal looking silly. But the question for now is whether both would pull the trigger.
