Insomniac Games has announced that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will launch on PlayStation 5 in fall 2023.
Revealed in a PlayStation Blog post, the long-awaited sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man will seemingly stick to the promised 2023 release year.
“What a year it’s been for PlayStation Studios,” said Insomniac’s creative director Bryan Intihar. “Here at Insomniac Games we’ve been in absolute awe of the work of our peers. Congrats to everyone on a successful 2022, and here’s to next year being just as exciting as we continue to get Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 ready for release next fall.”
The developer reassured fans of the release window in October but, as delays are quite common in the video game industry, many were concerned that the sequel would slip into 2024.
Spider-Man 2 was announced by Sony as a PS5 exclusive in September 2021, promising a continuation of Peter Parker and Miles Morales’ story as they face a new (but familiar) foe in Venom. The villain’s voice actor promised that the “game is massive” and Marvel Entertainment’s creative vice president Bill Rosemann commented at the same time that Spider-Man 2 will be “a little darker” than the two previous entries.
It will act as the first mainline entry in PlayStation’s Spider-Man series since the original, but the Miles Morales’ spin-off was released for PlayStation 4 and as a PS5 launch title in November 2020.
In our 9/10 review of that entry, IGN said: “Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a fantastic follow-up, telling a wonderful story while improving upon the fundamentals of the first game.”
