Persona 3 Reload Won’t Get an Expanded Golden or Royal Edition Anytime Soon, Dev Says

By | February 2, 2024

Persona 3 Reload won’t get an expanded edition akin to Persona 4’s Golden or Persona 5’s Royal anytime soon, developer Atlus has said.

In an interview with GamerWK, translated by Persona Central, Persona Team production manager Kazuhisa Wada insisted fans can buy Persona 3 Reload with confidence they won’t need to upgrade soon.

“Currently, we are not considering a revision like with Persona 5 to Persona 5 Royal, which involved significant changes and additions to the original title,” Wada said. “Fans can rest assured knowing that Persona 3 Reload offers a complete experience.”

Much more than just a Game of the Year Edition or similar product, the likes of Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal added a significant portion of story and gameplay to the base numbered titles a few years after launch, usually extending the already immense role playing games by 10 to 20 hours.

The original Persona 3 had two of these itself in Persona 3 FES and Persona 3 Portable, both of which arrived years after the main game and made myriad changes and improvements, like a post-game storyline and another protagonist.

Persona 3 Reload is a full remake of just the original version so doesn’t include any of these extras, however, leaving some fans wondering if an expanded version with this content is just around the corner. Wada’s assurance does line up with Atlus’s typical release schedule though, as the expanded versions usually arrive three or four years after the base game. By the same logic, a theoretical upgrade to Persona 3 Reload wouldn’t arrive until 2027 at the earliest.

Persona 3 Reload arrives today, February 2, on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X and S, and PC. A Nintendo Switch version hasn’t been announced so far, though Persona 3 Reload’s director Takuya Yamaguchi has said it’s not out of the question.

In our 9/10 review, IGN said: “With a stellar visual overhaul and countless small but impactful changes, Persona 3 Reload tells a timeless story of tragedy and hope with sharp emotional sincerity.”
