With a little more than a month before Rise of the Ronin releases, Team Ninja has offered a tour of the in-game setting and how it “faithfully brings” 1800s Japan to life.
In a new video and PlayStation Blog post, the developer details how Rise of the Ronin will have three major cities: Yokohama, Edo (today’s Tokyo), and Kyoto. Each of these three major cities is built as an open world, offering a fusion of Western and Japanese cultures that clash with one another in various ways.
Beyond loot at some in-game locations, the PS Blog Post details the various traversal methods players can use, ranging from a grappling rope that doubles as a way to reach high areas and can be used to grab enemies during combat to riding a horse, allowing you to travel long distances efficiently.
Yet the most interesting of the bunch, in my opinion, are the gliders, which are based on the Japanese inventor and gunsmith Kunitomo Ikkansai’s blueprint of Abikiru, which, according to Team Ninja, “is also believed to be the oldest airplane blueprint in Japan.”
Beyond the main story, players can also engage in additional side activities like taking on Somo missions provided by locals, allowing you to build relationships with said locals, or improving the security of dangerous areas by defeating rogues.
As previously revealed, Rise of the Ronin will take place at the end of the Edo period in the late 19th century, a tumultuous time when civil war ravaged the area.
Rise of the Ronin is released on March 22 exclusively on PlayStation 5.
