Welcome to the How Commodities Work page of the official IGN Wiki Guide and Walkthrough for Sea of Thieves. Commodities are a new addition to Sea of Thieves, recently introduced with the beginning of Season 2 for the game, and they’re an excellent addition for pirates who align strongly with the merchants of the game.

Here’s How Commodities Work in Sea of Thieves

Commodities are crates of gems, fabrics, and more that are now a part of Sea of Thieves’ merchant alliance sale system. Essentially, every Merchant Alliance representative in the game will have a ledger beside them that says what commodities are in demand for them and which commodities they have. The idea is that you want to buy commodities leaders have and sell them to leaders that need that commodity, all in the name of profit.

You must be an Emissary for the Merchant Alliance in order to buy and sell commodities.

Treat commodities like stocks, essentially. Commodities in demand from a Merchant Alliance leader will get you more gold when sold to them than those same commodities would if sold to a Merchant Alliance leader who isn’t in need of them. If something is in demand, sell that something to them for extra Gold. If something is in surplus, don’t sell them that something and instead, buy it from them (for cheap, because it’s in surplus) and sell it to a different Merchant Alliance leader that has a demand for it.

There are seven commodities in the game and it’s important to note that Merchant Alliance leaders have these in limited supply — their stock refreshes every couple of in-game days:

  • Crate of Broken Stone
  • Crate of Raw Sugar
  • Crate of Unclassified Gemstones
  • Crate of Unfiltered Minerals
  • Crate of Ungraded Tea
  • Crate of Unrefined Spices
  • Crate of Unsorted Silks

To sell a commodity to a Merchant Alliance leader, simply carry the commodity crate to them and select the option to sell it to them. Depending on demand, you could earn thousands of Gold pieces or just hundreds. We strongly recommend selling commodities only to those leaders that have a demand for those commodities, otherwise, you’re basically wasting your time.

If you want to see what Merchant Alliance leaders have a demand for and what commodities they have in surplus, head to a Merchant Alliance post and check their ledger (the teal book beside them). You’ll see the game’s multiple regions here — select one to view what commodities are in demand (“sought-after”) and what commodities are currently a surplus.
