Kenny Omega Says IWGP World Heavyweight Title Was Meant To Be His

By | May 30, 2021

Kenny Omega departed from NJPW to join AEW, and he hasn’t been back. His AEW contract would allow him to venture to NJPW for a match, but he hasn’t taken advantage of that at all. He still pays close attention to what is going on with his old stomping grounds.

While speaking to Sports Illustrated, Kenny Omega revealed that he told both Jay White and Will Ospreay that the foreigner roster in NJPW was in their hands after his departure. That turned out to be the case and they carried the banner.

Omega then addressed Will Ospreay relinquishing the IWGP World Heavyweight Title. He made a quip about the belt always being his, but that doesn’t mean he will go back to NJPW right away.

“Physically, even though he is one of the most gifted performers to ever step foot in the ring, there is only one Kenny Omega—and you can’t fill those shoes. Thus, now his belt is vacant, so perhaps it was always meant to be my belt and my belt alone. That’s not me making a firm statement as to whether I’ll make a venture out there, just that there is no one there that can fill my shoes or override my legacy.”

Kenny Omega’s shot was heard by many and it seems to have hit home. We will have to see who becomes the next top champion in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, but Kenny Omega’s Belt Collector personality might see that title as still his possession.

Should Kenny Omega return to NJPW and win that title? Sound off in the comments!
